Electronic music innovators and world-leading DJs RICHIE HAWTIN and LOCO DICE launch CNTRL: Beyond EDM – DISCOVERING & SHOWCASING Electronic & Techno(logy) based Music, a groundbreaking North American college lecture and club tour today, Monday, October 29 in Buffalo, NY with a lecture at SUNY Buffalo (The club date at Town Hall has been canceled to the pending Hurricane Sandy). The pair have officially revealed the lecture curriculum as well as announced CNTRL TV – DAILY BULLETIN, a daily live stream from the tour, CNTRL: BEYOND EDM, an exclusive iTunes compilation featuring music from various participants on the tour, and details about the CNTRL tour app.
As CNTRL will make its way through some of the leading universities and colleges featuring daytime lectures, followed by an evening of electronic music with RICHIE HAWTIN, LOCO DICE, EAN GOLDEN from DJ TechTools and their touring guest DJs at both, the tour also today launches a daily broadcast show with CNTRL TV – DAILY BRIEFING where HAWTIN, Dice and Golden present live from the bus and other locations from the tour via www.livebeats.com/minus. Guests from the tour will drop in at random moments and the show will discuss the tour plus the hot topics of the day in the world electronic dance music. The first episode goes live at 10:00 PM ET tonight.
CNTRL today also confirms that every date on the tour will feature a live stream from one act who is showcasing that evening including sets by Carl Craig (Toronto, Nov 8), Seth Troxler (Detroit, Nov 12), Kevin Saunderson (Chicago, Nov 16) plus HAWTIN, Dice and Golden. This stream is also via the Live Beats network and the CNTRL Facebook page (www.facebook.com/cntrlbeyondedm). See below for full calendar of streaming dates.
In conjunction with the tour, there’s also CNTRL: BEYOND EDM, a digital only, exclusive iTunes release available now at https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/cntrl-beyond-edm/id571935089. It features tracks by many of the CNTRL artists including RICHIE HAWTIN, Loco Dice, Wink, Victor Calderone, Ean Golden and more, providing a well-rounded sampling of music supported by CNTRL in its lectures and nighttime club sets.
The CNTRL app (available on iOS and Android) is the official mobile app for the CNTRL: BEYOND EDM tour. Containing artist information, schedules, video, pictures, music and more, you can follow the artists during the tour and receive updates and notifications with the app. Created by the M-nus team, the CNTRL app will be available soon at iTunes.
The various topics which will be discussed at the CNTRL college lecture sessions include topics as varied as:
The Evolving Artist with Richie Hawtin: For nearly 20 years, RICHIE HAWTIN has been a technology adventurer who is consistently at the forefront of electronic dance music period. Learn how he managed to maintain his focus while staying current in the market. Great for artists and aspiring musicians of all kinds.
Treating Art Like a Business: The artists have built huge companies around their artistic career. How do they balance the art and the business? Where does one begin and the other end? All three chime in on how business was a major driving force behind their artistic endeavors.
Mixing Modern Music / Importance of Sound: Today’s dance music is written and played on massive sound systems requiring careful considerations in sound. How to write and mix songs so they sound amazing when played through today’s high fidelity world.
Performing Live: DJs relish the idea of holding the reigns to 100,000k watt sound systems. Standing on stage in front of such a crowd is on a similar level to going on television or even performing at a major sporting event. How does each artist approach performing and fine tuning their ability to stay calm, cool and collected.
Old School Meets New School with Loco Dice: Many DJs still use the same classic turntable from the last 20 years with a few notable updates. How has turntable technology changed and what role does it play in today’s music landscape. What does it take to keep people dancing and how does Loco Dice use modern technology to provide a unique experience for each show?
Modern DJ Technology with Ean Golden: It is now easier and less expensive to get involved in DJing and electronic music than ever before. Recent technology advancements have also made it more fun than ever. Ean Golden shows some of the latest advances in DJ technology and how you too can get involved.
The Deeper side of Electronic Music: The panelists and guest have a combined DJ experience of over 70 years, guiding clubbers of all ages on a musical journey into the unknown. How has electronic music culture evolved over the last several decades and what does it look like now? Rich, Dice, Ean and guests take you on a journey into the deeper side of EDM.
EDM as a worldwide Force: EDM is a global movement. What is the role of the travelling DJ – to educate and inspire? EDM – where does it go from here: How does it grow without losing steam? How does it stay futuristic? What is the future for global electronic music? The artists and the audience exchange views.
The 17-date tour also takes in Berklee College of Music on October 31 and New York University’s Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music (November 3). CNTRL will feature a selection of artists whom HAWTIN and Loco Dice feel will give a good cross-section of the current and cutting-edge sounds of electronic music, including Carl Craig, Seth Troxler, Kevin Saunderson, Josh Wink, Victor Calderone, Paco Osuna, controller specialist DJ TechTools’ Ean Golden and others joining on specific days throughout the tour. CNTRL will also feature special guest speakers in each city during the daytime lecture programming, including Tiga (November 5, Montreal) and John Acquaviva (November 6, London, ON) with more to be announced.
The events will focus on the techno and technology aspects of modern-day electronic music, presenting the more futuristic and underground side of the genre, as championed by HAWTIN and Loco Dice and their peers for the last two decades. Central to the CNTRL concept are daytime seminars in the colleges to inform and inspire people about technology, music production, live performance, and the business of electronic music. These are presented by world-renowned electronic music production and DJ school, DUBSPOT
CNTRL is all about engaging young North American fans of EDM and showing them the roots of the music, the history of a global movement and demonstrating what the future of music technology and performance has the power to become. The tour will take place in over 15 cities across the eastern part of North America (with a west coast leg to be planned for 2013). A complete list of cities, schools and venues follows below.
Leading international headphone brand Sennheiser has aligned with the CNTRL tour as official ‘Partner in Sound.’ Sennheiser shares the ideology of the CNTRL concept and will join the tour to reinforce the importance of working with quality sound ideals and products in music technology. CNTRL is in also run in partnership with DUBSPOT: Partners in Education. DUBSPOT will curate the panels with HAWTIN and Loco Dice, and moderate all educational elements on the college campuses. Other partners include Native Instruments and Traktor, (the DJ software used by HAWTIN, Loco Dice and Golden), Elektro, Onebeat.TV, Beatport, Paxahau, DJ TechTools plus M-nus and Desolat, the latter being the labels of HAWTIN and Loco Dice respectively.

About RICHIE HAWTIN:
RICHIE HAWTIN is a sound and technology adventurer who has been named the “World’s Best DJ” in the most credible electronic music polls, and is widely acknowledged as being the most technologically-advanced artist in electronic music. He has invested in, endorsed and helped develop some of the most forward-thinking products in the electronic music space including Native Instrument’s pioneering Traktor software, number one dance music digital retailer Beatport, his Liine APP development company and Allen & Heath’s limited edition custom CTRL:92 DJ mixers—the first ever to be fully Midi-enabled, which both he and his father helped to conceptualize and design. In 2010 RICHIE HAWTIN relaunched his alter-ego Plastikman and launch the PLASTIKMAN LIVE world tour. The show was voted the best live act of 2010 by Resident Advisor readers and also was included in U.K. tastemaker magazine MixMag’s best live dance act shortlist. In conjunction, he released Arkives, a major Plastikman retrospective in multiple formats. This past spring he launched RICHIE HAWTIN Presents ENTER., his curated musical platform featuring some of the leading names in minimal/techno/house today for his residency in Ibiza. As Vibe recently put it: “EDM man of mystery – Richie Hawtin is arguably one of the biggest risk takers and boundary breakers in EDM history.”

About LOCO DICE:
LOCO DICE is widely considered to be one of the cornerstones of the electronic music community, both a lynchpin for and driving force behind house & techno music for well over a decade. Through a finely-balanced combination of breaking artists via his highly influential record label Desolat; his own accomplished production catalogue (for imprints such as M-nus, Cadenza, Ovum, Four Twenty and Cocoon); and his legendary DJ sets (his previous residency at Ibiza’s intimate house mecca DC-10, and now his current Amnesia terrace residency with Cocoon), Dice has forged a reputation that has seen him enter the small band of elite underground DJs. His appeal stems from a particular skill that DJs spend a lifetime trying to hone. In Dice this is inherent. His ability to puzzle together intangible moods and tap into a crowds collective consciousness fuels his internal cinematic view of music. As the highly respected tastemakers Resident Advisor explained in their ‘Top 100 Poll’ (where he was placed 4th); “what sets him apart isn’t what he plays, but the way he plays”. His unique mixing style is informed by a life-long affinity with Hip-Hop culture. His time as a Hip-Hop DJ reached its pinnacle in the mid-90’s when he toured with some of the genre’s leading artists. And his musical journey appears to now be coming full circle with the likes of ICE-T recently introducing him to the stage at Movement 2012 in Detroit, or Hip-Hop bible Vibe Mag pinning him as ‘a most dominant dance music force, [who is] treated like royalty and respected like a God’. Loco Dice’s appeal is a far-reaching as ever.
