Meanwhile, HOLY SHIP!—the world’s first three-day electronic music cruise presented by HARD Events, Cloud 9 Adventures and The Bowery Presents—completed its maiden voyage January 6-9, 2012, with almost 3,000 fans aboard the MSC Poesia, a 93,000-ton world-class cruise liner equipped with modern amenities to delight every passenger. HOLY SHIP! will return in 2013. HARD enthusiasts can pre-book for next year’s cruise by placing a $250 deposit per cabin starting February 15 on www.holyship.com.
The three-day tour, from Ft. Lauderdale, FL to Port Lucaya and a private island in the Bahamas, was well received by artists, fans and locals alike:
“…leave it to dance enthusiasts to take the concept of a music festival to a whole other level. Holy Ship! is a three-day mother load of all things electronic music, and last weekend it sailed its maiden voyage from Fort Lauderdale, onto the crystal clear waters of the Caribbean…’Back in ’97, I was on a boat with a bunch of German techno guys, and the idea of a cruise like this popped into my head,’ confessed Gary Richards, the producer of LA’s HARD Fests, and the mad genius behind Holy Ship! With a roster of enviable contacts from his DJing days, an active imagination, and serious balls, Richards’ vision coalesced into a weekend-long dance party, spread across several venues on board of a swanky, sixteen-floor, floating skyscraper. He managed to squeeze in over 2000 international guests, and 29 performers that included Fatboy Slim, Diplo and the crew from Paris Social Club (not to mention Ms. Dita von Teese and her favorite stage prop—a gigantic martini glass.)”
—Anetta Nowosleiska, BlackBook (1/10/12)
“Holy ship was the craziest thing to happen in EDM period.”
“on another note: @holy_ship was one of the best experiences i’ve ever had in my life.”
“man @holy_ship was krayyyyyzyyyyy. too many memories w/ all my homies too many to name i love you all and all the rad people that partied”
“@HOLY_SHIP it was like everything u wanted from a party. Times a million, in the Caribbean, 3 days long!”
Artists who appeared on the maiden voyage of HOLY SHIP! included Fatboy Slim, Laidback Luke, Rusko, Diplo, A-Trak, Steve Aoki, Skrillex, Tommy Lee & DJ Aero, Brodinski, Buraka Som Sistema, Gesaffelstein, Justin Martin, Zedd, DJ Craze, Dillon Francis, Destructo, Danny Brown, Dave Nada, Egyptrixx, Rory Phillips, Club Cheval, Jason Bentley, Posso, Doorly, Oliver, Gina Turner, Nick Catchdubs, Arthur Baker, Contra and Mike Deuce. There were special themed parties with the likes of Fools Gold, Dance Right and Paris Social Club.
Each artist aboard did two sets throughout the weekend in one of the five different music areas including the outdoor pool stage, the Teatro indoor theatre and the S32 Disco. Known globally as the queen of burlesque, Dita Von Teese performed a selection of her world famous burlesque routines to electronic music, a first in her career. Plus, DJ sets from surprise guests included Photek, J Devil (Jonathan Davis) and Alvin Risk, and vocalist SOFI joined Tommy Lee & Aero during their sets.
Beyond the music, the voyage was marked by many activities and workshops aboard the MSC Poesia. Dillon Francis, Zedd and Skrillex checked out Steve Aoki’s Poker Palace, a special engagement at the onboard casino offering poker, blackjack, craps, roulette, and slots. Laidback Luke took an afternoon stretch with Gina Turner’s yoga class on the tennis courts and A-Trak gave DJ tips in his DJ lessons workshop.
