Children’s Hospital Los Angeles has been named the best children’s hospital in California and among the best in the nation for clinical excellence with its selection to the prestigious US News & World Report Honor Roll. Children’s Hospital is home to The Saban Research Institute, one of the largest and most productive pediatric research facilities in the United States. The hospital is also one of America’s premier teaching hospitals through its affiliation since 1932 with the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California. With one of the nation’s most comprehensive programs just for kids, specialists at the Children’s Orthopaedic Center perform everything from spinal fusion procedures for complex spinal deformities to mending simple fractures with brightly colored casts. Bone issues in children require special consideration physically and emotionally. The center offers a supportive environment, comforting kids before, during and after care for their injury, as well as a multispecialty team of orthopaedic surgeons, orthopaedic nurses, physician assistants, oncologists, rehabilitation experts, prosthetics, physical therapists and biomedical engineers that work together to treat kids better.
The Mark Taper-Johnny Mercer Artists Program at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles is an innovative model that brings together local artists and performers with registered and certified Creative Arts Therapists who are trained to assist patients and families in building coping skills, exploring the thoughts and feelings related to hospitalization and illness, and utilizing the arts for exploration and self-expression. Research shows that art and music therapy reduce pain and anxiety and promote healing. The staff of certified music and art therapists work with patients one-on-one at their bedsides or in small groups in Child Life playrooms and the Teen Lounge. Their tools include sculpting clay and watercolor paints, as well as kazoos, guitars and songwriting software. The Mark Taper-Johnny Mercer Artists Program is entirely dependent on philanthropic funding; its services are not reimbursable by health insurance.
