DAVID BOWIE
BOWIE TO UNEARTH ëEARTHLING‰ IN EARLY ë97: DAVID BOWIE is currently in New
York mixing his forthcoming album EARTHLING, to be released in North America
late January/early February on Virgin Records. This will mark the first time
BOWIE has produced his own album since the classic DIAMOND DOGS in 1974.
Known song titles include ‹Telling LiesŠ, currently available on the
Internet at:
http://www.davidbowie.com,
‹Seven Years in TibetŠ (said to be
titled after the acclaimed autobiographical classic Seven Years in Tibet by
Heinrich Harrer and BOWIE‰s own investigation of Tibetan Buddhism in his
teens), the jungle-influenced ‹Little WonderŠ and a new version of the Tin
Machine track ‹Baby Universal.Š BOWIE performed all four songs live at
several east coast shows he played during weekends in September while
recording Earthling. Of his Manhattan show at Roseland, Neil Strauss of the
New York Times noted, ‹The songs from that album were among the highlights of
the show.Š Elsewhere, Glenn Kenny raved in the New York Daily News, ‹David
Bowie gave a sold-out crowd...a killer show alternating lively new material
with powerfully delivered classics in a smaller hall.Š BOWIE‰s influence and
songs are also to be found in current and upcoming film soundtracks including
Basquiat, which contains ‹A Small Plot Of Land,Š and the hit film Seven
features ‹Hearts Filthy Lesson,Š while ‹I‰m DerangedŠ will surface in David
Lynch‰s forthcoming movie ‹Lost Highway.Š All three of these tracks are
taken from Bowie‰s 1995 OUTSIDE album. Also of note
is BOWIE‰s presence on the ‹TrainspottingŠ soundtrack: he produced and
co-wrote the Iggy Pop‰s 1977 classics ‹Lust For LifeŠ and ‹Nightclubbing,Š
and co-produced the Lou Reed 1972 gem ‹Perfect Day.Š In the world of dance,
BOWIE‰s ‹Heroes,Š set to a score by Phillip Glass, is a key part of the
current Twyla Tharp dance tour. Meanwhile, BOWIE also performed a very
special set at the 10th Annual Bridge School acoustic benefit at the
Shoreline Amphitheater near San Francisco on October 19 and 20, along with
Neil Young, Pearl Jam and Patti Smith, of which the San Francisco Chronicle
headline read, ‹Surprise Appearance at Bridge Show: Pete Townshend shows up,
but David Bowie steals show at annual rock ën‰ roll fund-raiser.Š BOWIE has
not performed ‹unpluggedŠ since the early stages of his career and this
special occasion was marked with sets that included new interpretations of
classic tracks such as ‹Aladdin Sane,Š ‹Jean Genie,Š ‹Let‰s Dance,Š ‹China
Girl,Š ‹Heroes,Š ‹Man Who Sold The World,Š as well as the Velvet Underground
gem ‹White Light, White Heat.Š (After 1990‰s ‹Sound and VisionŠ tour, BOWIE
announced that he would only take these songs on the road again for a
‹special or charitableŠ event.) Next, BOWIE will perform October 25 on the
VH1 ‹Fashion Awards.Š
