HOME RECORDING: ANN and NANCY WILSON of HEART have
written a new song,
"Momma Why," which will appear on HOME ALIVE: THE ART OF SELF
DEFENSE , due
out February 20 (Epic Records). The song was debuted at a recent concert
at the O.K. Hotel in Seattle to benefit Home Alive--a Seattle Rape center
that seeks to educate men and women about rape by offering affordable
classes in self-defense and rape prevention. Of the performance, NANCY
commented, "It was the most intense set weve ever done." ANN
continues, "It
was our favorite show ever--just NANCY and me and some
percussion."
"Momma
Why" was co-written by ANN and NANCY with Frank Cox of the
LOVEMONGERS
(ANN and NANCY's side group). Cox and Kristen Barry (whom
HEART fans will
remember from her backing vocals on THE ROAD HOME ) also
appeared at the
concert to benefit Home Alive, which was formed after the July 1993 rape
and murder of Mia Zapata, lead singer of the Seattle-based the Gits. As
Gretta Harley told Billboard magazine about the organization,
"Right after Mia was killed, a lot of us felt angry and confused, so we
got together informally just to talk about what to do next." The
double-CD features performances by an array of Seattle bands including
Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Nirvana, the Fastbacks and the Gits, alongside
spoken word pieces by Jello Biafra, Exene Cervenka and Jim Carroll. In
the meantime, while ANN and NANCY write songs in preparation
for their
debut solo albums, a full-length LOVEMONGERS album that's due out in
late
1996 (produced by ANN and NANCY) will be recorded in the
coming months in
NANCY's basement studio and mixed at Bad Animals, the studio they
co-own in Seattle.
