“With
each album, Australia’s The Living End have dropped hints that someday
they’re gonna drop a rock ‘n’ roll hydrogen bomb. So here it is: The
band’s trademark punk and rockabilly characteristics are all over MODERN
ARTillery (see ‘Tabloid Magazine’ and ‘End Of The World,’
respectively), as are the mod/punk influences (‘Who’s Gonna Save Us?,’
‘In The End’ and ‘Jimmy’) that first manifested on 2001’s Roll On.
But the trigger here is Chris Cheney’s masterful songwriting, which has always
flirted with Joe Strummer--or Elvis Costello--level quality, but only now hits
the mark consistently. Consequently, MODERN ARTillery is wonderfully
combustible—but don’t bother to shield your eyes when it blows up.”

“Wonderfully
combustible” is how Alternative Press, in a five-star review in the
January 2004 issue, describes MODERN
ARTillery (Reprise Records), the new album from Australian rock trio THE
LIVING END due out February 24.
The band will amplify the pulsating
disc’s release with a high-octane U.S. tour package in early Spring (TBA).
The
first single from MODERN ARTillery is “Who’s Gonna Save Us?” a
vigorous and impassioned rocker that taps into the uncertain times we live in.
The song will reach radio in mid-January, but is featured in the Farrelly Brothers film Stuck On You, starring Matt Damon
and Greg Kinnear, due in theaters December 12.
Recorded
in Los Angeles with producer Mark Trombino (Blink 182, Jimmy Eat World), MODERN
ARTillery is filled with 14
volatile tracks that burn through emotions everyone shares: love, loss, regret
and fear. THE LIVING END--who’ve
built a reputation for their fiery live performances--are currently in the midst
of a major tour of Australia, where the album debuted at #3 on the album chart
and is already certified gold.
