A CUT-BY-CUT LOOK AT SPLENDER'S 'HALFWAY DOWN THE SKY' WITH LEAD SINGER/SONGWRITER WAYMON BOONE
I DON'T UNDERSTAND:
A song about my never ending dreams. They're so incredibly strange and
delightfully wicked, I often get confused between what was real and what was
dreamt.
YEAH, WHATEVER:
I call this our F.U. song...it's a evil reactionary song to what I thought
was going to be a great wondrous thing that instead turned into something
flatter than paper. Now that it's over, I do feel kind of bad about being
so spiteful!
MONOTONE:
A song I wrote in about five minutes sitting on the edge of my bed. I had
just gotten into an unresolved fight with a girl, and once she was gone, I
suppose I just continued the conversation until I felt the argument had
ended.
SPACEBOY:
To do what we do is nothing short of a battle: to stay focused and positive
is sometimes an effort. Outside people can play a big part in that energy.
So I think this song is about distancing myself from those people who've
gotten in my way and held me down. It's about going somewhere to hide until
they pass me by. Don't talk down to me or up to me, just on the same level.
Then maybe we'll have a true connection.
SPECIAL:
My partner in this rock and roll crime game for nearly 10 years has been
(SPLENDER bassist) James Cruz. We have a deep love and respect for each
other, yet at times we can fight like angry brothers. I'm definitely an
impulsive guy who fights for what he wants. It's a song I imagined James
singing at me on a day that he wanted me dead!
I THINK GOD CAN EXPLAN:
It's a true story a girl told me about her ex-lover who became a crazed
stalker obsessed with her every drop. It's a twisted tale sung for reasons
unknown from his point of view.
SUPERNATURAL:
An ode to my best friend and lover..."misery." She's been there for me in
my time of need and never lets me down. No matter how long we separate, we
always find a way to be together, whenever.
IRRESPONSIBLE:
Sometimes people experience great sex and sometimes bad sex. This song is
all about the regrettable bad.
I APOLOGIZE:
About a friend I always seemed to hurt over and over again. Written as a
small gift that was never officially given.
SPIN:
I spent several weeks of my life sleeping on the floor of our rundown
rehearsal space in the dark writing. I was trying to cope with the loss of
a lover. All I wanted to do was suffer. This song is all about
that...suffering inside and out.
CIGARETTE:
It's all about ignorance. Ending up where you don't want to be based on the
roads of others you insist on following.
WALLFLOWER:
I've always been a man of distance. I never let anyone except a chosen few
into my circle. This song is about that feeling of being me, blending into
the scenery.
LONDON:
This is about being getting what you want and still not being satisfied.
Since I was a kid, I always had this odd fantasy of going to London to
perform one show. Many years later, I accomplished that dream but was still
left empty and dying for something more. It scared me and broke me down.
