WINNERS ANNOUNCED AT UNPRECEDENTED CONCERT
IN HONOR OF THE LEGENDARY JAM MASTER JAY
FEATURING PERFORMANCES FROM HIP-HOP’S BIGGEST NAMES
On Thursday, November 29 at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City, the hip hop community honored Run DMC’s legendary DJ Jam Master Jay at the inaugural J.A.M. AWARDS & CONCERT. Winners of the 2007 J.A.M. AWARDS were announced throughout the evening, which also featured memorable performances and collaborations from rap’s biggest names.
The J.A.M. AWARDS were set up by to show the world the most positive aspects of rap. Nominees were chosen by the Board Members of the Jam Master Jay Foundation for Music–created in Jay’s honor by his wife Terri Corley-Mizell, DMC and his closest friends to support music and arts education in rural and urban schools–for their outstanding efforts in promoting social Justice, Arts & Music (“J.A.M.”). During the show, one winner was announced in each of the three categories. The winners were:
JUSTICE – Chuck D presented by Dead Prez
ARTS – Lee Quinones presented by Q-Tip & Bumpy Knuckles
MUSIC – Wyclef presented by Everlast & Kaves
Terri Corley-Mizell and two of her and Jay’s sons presented the Honorary Award to Ivan Taback–the president and co-founder of the Jam Master Jay Foundation for Music–for his dedication and work for the foundation and event.
Heavyweight collaborations at the J.A.M. AWARDS & CONCERT included Snoop Dog and DMC performing the classic Run DMC track “Sucker MCs,” LL Cool J joining EPMD for “Rampage,” Mobb Deep featuring Big Noyd, Julez Santana performing with Jim Jones, Everlast backed by Cypress Hill’s DJ Muggs and closing out the night was Raekwon featuring a guest spot by Cappadonna. Hosted by DMC and Corley-Mizell, the event also featured performances by Kid Capri, De La Soul, Mista Sinista, Dead Prez, Papoose as well as Biz Markie and Marley Marl introducing M.O.P.
The J.A.M. AWARDS & CONCERT was created by EPOP International Founder and CEO David Clark and “Kaves”–a New York graffiti legend and front-man for the band The Lordz. The event is presented by the Jam Master Jay Foundation for Music and EPOP International with the support of adidas, The Fader and Hot 97.
