“A dense and beautiful heavy rock album with as many hardcore influences as progressive ones, and a genuine grower: rewarding and utterly gripping.”
ALEXISONFIRE have announced they’ll stream their new album OLD CROWS / YOUNG CARDINALS in its entirety today directly via the Vagrant Records site: http://aof.vagrant.com. The album premiere will be available to U.S. residents only.
For their new album– out on June 23 on Vagrant Records (U.S.A.) and on Dine Alone and RoadRunner in the rest of the world–ALEXISONFIRE re-teamed with Julius Butty who also produced the group’s Crisis and Watch Out! discs.
OLD CROWS / YOUNG CARDINALS–the group’s fourth studio album and first in almost three years–is beginning to receive early acclaim.
Check out a few critical soundbites here:
“Alexisonfire’s Old Crows/Young Cardinals marks a major policy shift… …Pettit has traded his trademark shrieking for a gargling-with-gravel punk attack. It sounds like all those summers hanging at the cottage with Lemmy Kilmister and Lars Frederiksen finally made him realize there’s more than one way to blow out your vocal cords. That makes Old Crows/Young Cardinals a welcome reinvention, no matter how much you loved to shred your larynx by singing along to ‘Pulmonary Archery.’ “
“Hardcore punk, post-hardcore, hardcore metal… On their fourth full length overall, 2009's Old Crows/Young Cardinals, you get a bit of all three aforementioned styles, with a healthy dose of melody stirred into the sonic blender to boot. And this hodgepodge approach should certainly bring Alexisonfire some U.S. rock radio airplay (they already scored their breakthrough hit back home on their previous album, 2006's Crisis), especially such standout tracks as the leadoff single, ‘Young Cardinals,’ as well as the album-opening ‘Old Crows,’ ‘The Northern,’ and the surprisingly tranquil and sweetly sung album closer, Burial.’”
“Old Crows/Young Cardinals is really good. It's fast and intense, Dallas sounds great, and it's just an in-your-face type of album. AOF fans will love…”
“Alexisonfire have clearly finally reached the place they have been driving to for so long: the perfect blending of hardcore, hard rock and the myriad influences that the quintet draw on–from Nick Drake and Jeff Buckley to Johnny Cash, Sigur Ros, Mogwai, At The Drive In, Radiohead…So much more than a good genre band: they truly own their sound. Two thirds of the way in, the track [‘Midnight Regulation’] is really going for it with Dallas/George interplay and a gorgeously distorted guitar-line ripping through.”
“OLD CROWS / YOUNG CARDINALS is their best work yet. It would have been easy to fall back and rehash Crisis… Instead the band have stuck the knife into a dying genre and breathed life into a new one. 'Old Crows' is rapidly becoming my new favorite AOF track as the guitars rumble in the build up and Dallas Green takes us into one of the album's catchier moments. The lead-in to the energetic and assertive 'Young Cardinals' is seamless and perfect. 'No Rest' and 'Emerald Street' continue the up-tempo, quicker tracks. But this album is certainly diverse and even the slower tracks fail to ruin the album's flow. 'The Northern' and 'Burial' both work brilliantly and come in at the perfect time. Screamo is dead. Bring on a new musical revolution.”
“As soon as the first track 'Old Crows' kicks in, and especially at the next track which is not very surprisingly called 'Young Cardinals,’ I noticed the more punk rock direction the band is going in. From the typical Crisis-like post-hardcore tracks like 'Heading for the Sun' and 'Born and Raised' to the faster punk-like tracks like 'Accept Crime' and the extremely catchy 'Sons of Privilege' to the slower, more emotional 'The Northern' and final track 'Burial.' In an interview lead singer George Pettit stated the band wanted to ‘put a knife’ into screamo rather than saving it, and they definitely did it. This album has the most guts Alexisonfire has had to date. OLD CROWS / YOUNG CARDINALS is a damn good album once again and may be one of their best yet.”
In touring news, ALEXISONFIRE will bring their explosive live show to the entire summer run of the Vans Warped Tour 2009 (June 26-August 23), joining NOFX, 3Oh!3, Bad Religion, Flogging Molly, TSOL, Underoath and many more on the annual punk rock extravaganza which celebrates its 15th anniversary this year. Post Warped, the group are confirmed for the main stage of both the Reading and Leeds U.K. festivals performing alongside Kings of Leon, Kaiser Chiefs and Placebo, to name a few. In October, the group will head back overseas for a European trek with Anti-Flag, The Fall of Troy and Ghost of a Thousand. Expect ALEXISONFIRE to tour throughout 2009 and beyond.
