ALTERNATIVE PRESS–the definitive national music and youth culture magazine–is celebrating 25 years in publishing with multiple special issues and events across the U.S. throughout 2010.
The ALTERNATIVE PRESS 25th anniversary issue for (AP 264, July) will hit stands June 1. In this issue, the magazine re-created beloved vintage AP cover images with today’s of-the-moment tastemakers including The Maine (as Brand New and My Chemical Romance), 3OH!3 (as Kid Rock and Rob Zombie), Escape The Fate (as the Afghan Whigs, as well as putting their spin on Green Day and Blink-182’s “Pop Disaster” cover), Jeffree Star (as Marilyn Manson), All Time Low (as Red Hot Chili Peppers), Oli Sykes from Bring Me The Horizon (as Trent Reznor), Hayley Williams from Paramore (as Shirley Manson from Garbage), Person L (as Radiohead), Underoath (as the Mighty Mighty Bosstones) and Wil Francis from Aiden/William Control (as Tim Armstrong). The July issue will also include: “The Oral History of AP, Pt. 1 (1985-1995); the Monthly Almanac Page, which features every July cover of the magazine; and “Our Back Pages,” an outtake photo from a Smashing Pumpkins cover shoot from 1993. The July issue will only be available from June 1 through July 5. More 25th anniversary issues will continue all year.
“I thought it was important to reconcile-or reacquaint—generations of AP readers,” says Jason Pettigrew, AP’s editor-in-chief. “So even if today’s younger readers aren’t familiar with the old-school artists, it still makes for a sweet photo feature. And while the story of our first 10 years may look incredibly self-congratulatory to our critics, we wouldn’t have done it if we hadn’t received countless letters and e-mails from readers, students and would-be upstart competitors asking us about our history.”
The Los Angeles art show will open on Friday, July 9 from 7:30pm-11:00pm (VIP opening reception) and Saturday, July 10, from 8:00-11:00pm (public opening reception) at the Merry Karnowsky Gallery (170 S. La Brea, Los Angeles, CA 90036). The visual artists/musicians contributing works for the event include: Adam Jones (Tool), Andy “The Butcher” Mrotek (the Academy Is…), Black Francis (the Pixies), Camille Rose Garcia (the Real Minks), Gerard Way (My Chemical Romance), Joby J. Ford (the Bronx), John Gourley (Portugal. The Man), Jordan Buckley (Every Time I Die), Liz McGrath (Miss Derringer), Marilyn Manson, Matt “Portland” Hay (Nora), Matt Skiba (Alkaline Trio), Marc “Porter” McKnight (Atreyu), Morgan Slade (Miss Derringer), Pete Wentz (Fall Out Boy), Shawn Harris (Maniac), Shepard Fairey, Shirley Manson (Garbage), Tara McPherson, Tim Armstrong (Rancid) and Travis McCoy (Gym Class Heroes), with more artists to be announced. The entire exhibition will be on view from July 9-July 23, 2010. A New York art show is planned for the month of October–stay tuned for more information.
“These artists appearing in our gallery exhibit reflect the diversity that has appeared in the pages of Alternative Press this past quarter-century,” explains publisher Norman Wonderly. “I have been witness to so many changes over the years in the publishing world, however, one constant has been the talented artists we work with. This exhibit showcases amazing musicians whose talent extends beyond the stage.”
Since 1985, AP has been an important independent voice for music fans looking for more than the commercial option. What started out as a local fanzine more than 25 years ago has developed into an internationally distributed magazine covering the contemporary punk scene.
In other news, the magazine has announced the first of several free 25th anniversary fan appreciation parties occurring in select cities throughout the U.S for the rest of the year. The first ALTERNATIVE PRESS 25th Anniversary Bash, presented by VANS, is set for June 23rd in Las Vegas at Area 702 indoor skate park (3040 Simmons St. Ste. 104, North Vegas, NV), with doors at 5:45pm. The Vegas show is a veritable British invasion featuring performances from UK acts Bring Me The Horizon, Enter Shikari, You Me At Six and Your Demise. There are only two ways for fans to get tickets for this intimate show: fans must either be an AP subscriber to win one of 100 pairs of tickets given away at altpress.com/subscribercontests or be at the venue early on the day of the show to grab one of 75 tickets available on a first come, first served basis.
In online news, look for ALTERNATIVE PRESS magazine to debut an entirely new website to take them through the next 25 years. The website re-design will debut on June 28.
