GEARING UP TO HEADLINE NEWLY EXPANDED SECOND STAGE AT OZZFEST
Next week DISTURBED will celebrate one year on Billboard’s Top 200 albums chart with their debut album THE SICKNESS (Giant/Reprise). The platinum release, which was recently certified gold in Canada, continues to reel in new fans, thanks to the fiercely memorable singles “Stupify” and “Voices,” both permanent fixtures at radio, and the band’s tireless non-stop touring.
In their recent Sunday Los Angeles Times feature (April 15, 2001), Lina Lecaro described some of the characteristics that have lead to the Chicago-based band’s popularity: “Incorporating pensive lyrics, thumping electronic effects, growling vocals and a dramatic stage atmosphere, Disturbed may be more serious than most of its peers, but it’s no less exciting.”
DISTURBED–vocalist DAVID DRAIMAN, guitarist DAN DONEGAN, drummer/programmer MIKE WENGREN and bassist FUZZ–are currently spreading “the sickness” on their first major headlining tour of U.S. venues with a group of hand-picked supporting acts that include Mudvayne, Spineshank, Godhead, Skrape and Nothingface. Says DRAIMAN about the powerful line-up: “I think that for our first bout, as a headliner, it should really be straight up, exactly what Disturbed is all about. And that’s why the bill is uncompromising, in your face and unrelenting.”
In an effort to keep in touch with their growing loyal audience, DISTURBED have made it possible for fans to follow them from city to city by logging onto the band’s official website (www.disturbed1.com) and clicking on “Tour Diary.” After selecting one of the band’s tour stops, users can choose to download live performances and backstage footage or read a diary entry, summarizing the excitement from the road.
After their 28-city headlining trek concludes May 11 with at New York City’s Hammerstein Ballroom, DISTURBED will catch their breath before making their triumphant return to OZZFEST on June 8 in Chicago. The band will headline the newly revamped second stage, which for the first time, is designed to accommodate a minimum of 15,000 fans in a general admission setting. In fact, DISTURBED passed on an offer to play on the main stage of the prominent summer festival tour. DRAIMAN explains their decision to headline the second stage: “This is a full contact sport. This is not something you sit by on the sidelines and watch. You have to be involved in it…We don’t want to play to people in seats. It’s just that simple. I mean the whole vibe of the second stage is, in our opinion, a hundred times cooler. Granted that with the main stage you have the benefit of the pavilion’s enclosure and the production, and there’s the sonic element-it does sound better at times. But at the end of the day you don’t have the sea of people moving as one to the beat of the song.”
