The COACHELLA FILM FESTIVAL–which takes place during the COACHELLA VALLEY MUSIC AND ARTS FESTIVAL Saturday, April 26 & Sunday, April 27 in Indio, CA–will screen a line-up of cutting-edge music-based documentaries, narrative shorts, videos and preview clips of hot movies to come. In addition to the screening of Fischerspooner’s documentary #1, concert-goers will be able to view the US premieres of such films as Good Times – The Film, which depicts the life and times of pioneering funk-soul UK DJ Norman Jay; The Backyard, winner of the Silverlake Film Festival about the underground world of backyard wrestling; and Eastside, a 30-minute doc directed by Kuang Lee on the phenomenon of skateboarding in Asia. Paul Hough, director of The Backyard and its star The Lizard, Kuang Lee and members of Fischerspooner will appear for Q&A sessions about their projects. In addition, out-of-print Bob Marley concert clips courtesy of Universal Music and the Bob Marley estate will be shown.
Also on tap are clips from the movies Word, a hip-hop doc featuring Company Flow, Eminem and Capone; the West Coast rave movement film chronicle Synergy – Visions of Vibe featuring Orbital, Jonathon Moore (of Coldcut), Carl Cox, Sandra Collins, Sven Vath and more; and COACHELLA, the long-awaited official documentary featuring moments captured from the first two years of the critically acclaimed festival. Word will be released on DVD May 27 and Synergy hits stores May 13. There is no release date yet scheduled for COACHELLA as the film is still in the process of being shot to include this year’s festival.
To round it all out, the top music directors’ short films from the MVPA (Music Video Producers Association) Music Directors’ Cuts Film Festival will be shown as well. These shorts–titled Buttbaby, The Crabs, A Ninja Pays Half and State Of Da Union–cannot be seen anywhere else publicly except for Coachella.
