CYPRESS HILL SMOKEOUT
MUSIC FESTIVAL, CANNABIS CUP AND MEDICAL MARIJUANA EXPO
CELEBRATES SUCCESSFUL RETURN AFTER SIX-YEAR HIATUS
WITH 30,000 ATTENDEES OCTOBER 23 & 24, 2009
The CYPRESS HILL SMOKEOUT, presented by Guerilla Union–the promotion, marketing and touring company behind world-class hip-hop platforms such as Rock the Bells and Paid Dues—and Cypress Hill, returned this past Friday, October 23 and Saturday, October 24 to the San Manuel Amphitheatre in Southern California as an epic two-day mind-opening experience encompassing a music festival and cannabis expo where they celebrate these products, you can even get online with a cbdmd coupon code for more affordable prices. This landmark event, launched by Cypress Hill in 1998 and which last took place in 2003 to create awareness around cannabis counter-culture, drew over 30,000 attendees over the weekend and highlighted 30 exclusive live performances on three stages.
Cypress Hill, the seminal Southern California rap group, headlined Friday (October 23) night when they made hip-hop history with their first-ever performance of their breakthrough album Black Sunday in its entirety. The SmokeOut also featured reunion performances from Goodie Mob and Geto Boys, plus sets from Hieroglyphics with Del, Psycho Realm (who was joined by B Real), Devin the Dude, Swollen Members w/ Moka Only, B-Real and Shortdawg Tha Native. Tech N9ne made a surprise guest appearance.
On Saturday (October 24), the music divided into three stage areas. Kerrang! Awards ‘Best Live Band’ Slipknot, Grammy-winning art rockers Deftones and Cypress Hill headlined the main stage, along with Pennywise and Big B. It also featured a comedy set from hosts Cheech & Chong plus Sublime’s first performance in 13 years. Touted Rollingstone.com (10/26/09), “They weren’t billed as headliners on Saturday’s SmokeOut Festival, which rolled out pot-friendly acts like Method Man and Redman, Cheech & Chong, Kottonmouth Kings and hosts Cypress Hill, but there’s no doubt Sublime, featuring surviving members Eric Wilson and Bud Gaugh — with 21-year-old Rome Ramirez positioned where the late Brad Nowell once stood — were a major draw…as the threesome hit the stage in the early afternoon, the crowd welcomed them back with open minds and hearts. Ramirez dedicated the first song, ‘Crazy Fool,’ to Nowell, then competently led the amphitheater sing-along through classics like ‘Santeria,’ ‘Wrong Way,’ ‘Date Rape,’ and ‘What I Got,’ all the while keeping the vibe jovial, you could even say celebratory.”
Across the field on the Indonesia stage just past the SmokeOut Expo that featured over 50 exhibitors, Bad Brains, Method Man & Redman, Kottonmouth Kings, Immortal Technique, Living Legends, Mix Master Mike, DJ Muggs, Dirty Heads and Literates with Sen Dog rocked out while Afrika Bamabataa, Tony Touch, Fat Lip, Bobo & Rhettmatic and Rocky Rock slammed DJ sets in the VIP area. Said David Hall of the Orange County Register (10/25/09), “By successfully marrying genres from hip-hop to heavy metal, from punk to reggae, Cypress Hill Smokeout re-established itself after a six-year hiatus as a haven and hovel of musical unity, one that has reclaimed its reputation as one of the most notable world-class, pro-pot festivals around.”
Coinciding with the music performances, the CYPRESS HILL SMOKEOUT also featured informational guest panels moderated by cannabis experts: former High Times editor and CelebStoner.com publisher Steve Bloom; longtime magazine editor, writer and frequent TV commentator Shirley Halperin who also co-authored with Bloom the books Pot Culture: The A-Z Guide to Stoner Language & Life and Reefer Movie Madness: The Ultimate Stoner Film Guide (out April 2010); and Dale Sky Clare, Executive Chancellor of Oaksterdam University and Director of Public Relations and Patient Advocacy for the Medical Cannabis Association.
The SMOKEOUT panels included “Marijuana 101: The Higher Education of Pot” featuring panelists Amanda Rain, Sarah Diesel and Jeff Jones; “CelebStoners Speak Out for Cannabis” with panelists Michael Rapaport, Mickey Avalon and Adrianne Curry: “SmokeOut Musicians Session” with panelists Tommy Chong, B-Real and Kottonmouth King’s Lou Dog; and “Free the Weed: Legalization Now!” with panelists Russ Belville, Debby Goldsberry, Allison Margolin and Ed Rosenthal.
