DAVID BOWIE TO LAUNCH CHILDREN'S RADIO
David Bowie has announced that his website (www.davidbowie.com ) will launch an Internet Radio Station for kids called Kick Out the Jammies (KOTJ) on Thursday, July 12. The station includes a variety of music for children of all ages, hand picked by Mr. Bowie himself and members of his online community, BowieNet.
Inspired by his daughter Alexandria (born last August), KOTJ follows on the heels of two other Internet Radio Stations launched by Bowie earlier this year.
"It was fairly inevitable, I suppose," says Bowie. "I was putting together tapes to play while Alex took a bath or had breakfast or… and it occurred to me that it would be a nice thing to put together a station's worth of stuff for kids."
Unlike the previous two Internet Radio Stations launched by Bowie which are available only to members of his Internet Community, Kick Out the Jammies will be available to both members and non-members alike.
"This is just the first in a series of fun things we have planned for this summer," a spokesman from BowieNet said.
Like the other channels of BowieRadio, KOTJ will utilize RealNetworks technology to stream high quality audio. KOTJ also utilizes the same proprietary Internet radio solution developed by AxisPoint that automates reporting to performing rights organizations like ASCAP, BMI and SESAC.
David Bowie has long been making news on the Internet, winning the "Online Pioneer Award" from Yahoo Internet Life as well as the "Best Artist Site" of the year 2000. Some of Mr. Bowie's other online firsts include initiating EMI's Digital Download Campaign, hosting a 'FanMix' in July, 2000 (where he asked fans to vote on different mixes of a song in a live streaming event from the recording studio), and his recent decision to offer fans an exclusive live version of Ziggy Stardust via digital download utilizing CD recognition technology. His subscription based Internet community first launched in 1998 and has paved the way for other artists such as Dave Mathews Band, Hanson and Prince who recently adopted a similar model.
Axispoint (www.axispoint.com ) is a technology solution provider offering customized solutions from network infrastructure to database and application programming. The company's Internet radio solution with Digital Rights Reporting is the latest addition to an extensive menu of software licensed by this New York City based corporation.
