DEEP DISH CELEBRATES A DECADE OF DANCE
WITH GLOBAL UNDERGROUND AND AN INTERNATIONAL SUPPORT TOUR THIS SUMMER
DEEP DISH – GLOBAL UNDERGROUND 025: ‘TORONTO’
MARKS THE 25TH RELEASE FOR DANCE MUSIC’S LEADING INTERNATIONAL LABEL
OUT ON JUNE 10 WITH BONUS CD’S AVAILABLE ON JULY 22
It’s been well over a year since house music fans saw a new full-length offering from DEEP DISH. This summer the wait is over as the Grammy Award-winning duo of Ali ‘Dubfire’ Shirazinia and Sharam Tayebi return with another stellar mix compilation, DEEP DISH – GLOBAL UNDERGROUND 025: ‘TORONTO.’ To commemorate the silver edition, Global Underground (GU)–the label that introduced dance music’s international elite to a world market–is releasing for the first time ever a staggering four-CD package.
The standard edition, a two-CD set, will be released June 10. GU will follow this up July 22 with the release of two single supplemental bonus CDs, each mixed by Dubfire and Sharam respectively, encompassing a twisted range of current, unreleased and classic house. The limited editions will be available to press upon request. The title will also be available as a three-LP limited edition vinyl set.
As the follow-up to their last release and one of GU’s best sellers, Deep Dish – GU 021: ‘Moscow,’ Deep Dish have now put on disc what could be considered their best mix to date. Inspired by their massive DJ set played for more than 3,000 club-goers on Saturday December 7, 2002 at Canada’s largest club The Guvernment in Toronto, the compilation boasts a track listing that represents the best in cutting-edge house, infused with massive passionate dance floor energy.
Two years ago, their ‘Moscow’ mix demonstrated a harder edge. With ‘Toronto,’ Deep Dish opt for a deeper, yet still steely sound that never loses its fat-bottomed funk. It showcases tracks that illustrate a creative new wave of Canadianhouse talents.
There have been seismic upheavals in dance music in the last year with many commentators talking about a slump as super-clubbing declined. With this album, Deep Dish has put the attention back on the music and is the reason for choosing the unexpected Toronto as a location. “We felt that Canada had been neglected for a long time,” says Deep Dish’s Sharam Tayebi. “There’s been a resurgence of Canadian producers such as Luke Fair, MV, Sultan, Tone Depth, and Max Graham that we wanted to spotlight on the compilation; these guys are doing some amazing stuff…that on top of the fact that we have a good following there.”
His partner Ali Shirazinia-–aka Dubfire–concurs. “When we say Toronto we’re really saying Canada. We’ve met a lot of talented people and some great promoters so we naturally jumped at the chance to shine the light on them.”
On ‘Toronto,’ Deep Dish subtly fuse together deep house, garage, tech-house and techno with an abundant amount of exclusive tracks and outstanding vocal remixes from many of today’s most prolific underground artists, a standard of their production history. Disc 1 is a proper house mix of luscious, deeply funky grooves and spacey vocals: Deep Dish tweak the wayward bass of Meat Katie’s remix of Stephane K’s “Numb” under an urgent vocal by Julie McKnight of Louie Vega & Jay “Sinister” Sealee’s “Diamond Life”; Montreal artists Sultan & The Greek contribute the hustling grooves and Middle Eastern synth swoops of “Rezin,” with similar Arabic whisperings in Sultan’s solo track “Nightvisions” shivering like ghosts in the groove; and Creamer & K make an appearance for their ‘I’ll Be Loving You’ remix of Moony’s haunting “Doves.”
For Disc 2, Deep Dish up the stakes with a mix of riveting grooves, hot spooky vocals, rock riffs and caustic sweeps: Situation 2WO’s “Way2tite” is a bouncing ball of a record with a husky female vocal; Planet Funk’s remix of Elisa’s “Time” is a serious vocal track backed by a beckoning guitar; Junkie XL & Sasha dazzles with the melodic Spanish guitar driven beat mover “Breezer”; Sander Kleinenberg’s “Work To Do” is a punishing funk workout with a raw and soulful vocal; Paul Rogers’ “Krafty” soups up its hi-NRG engine with what sounds like the distorted whistles of distant steam trains; and Maurice and Noble’s “Hoochi Koochi Man” has a spangly guitar and solemn voice bursting into a thumping groove that flows like a river. Like ‘Moscow’ before it, this release stands true to Deep Dish’s undying commitment to their craft.
The pair, who celebrate their 10-year musical partnership this year, have on their agenda a heavy international tour schedule in support of Deep Dish – Global Underground 025: ‘Toronto’ this summer. Stated a review from the April 29 issue of the Los Angeles Times from their recent Coachella appearance, “If Coachella is indeed the biggest U.S. dance stage, then one shouldn’t be able to do what the duo of Ali Shirazinia and Sharam Tayebi accomplished so easily on Sunday. Whipping through a mix of house-y vocal tracks, Indian and percussion-rich instrumentals, and reworked hits from the likes of Coldplay and U2, Deep Dish turned the Sahara tent into their own personal playground.”
