FOLLOW SUCCESSFUL INWARD SCREAM TOUR
IN SUPPORT OF CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED SECOND U.S. FULL-LENGTH ALBUM
‘THE MARROW OF A BONE’
WITH SUMMER NORTH AMERICAN TOUR SUPPORTING DEFTONES
DIR EN GREY continues to gain momentum in 2007. Their second U.S. full length album THE MARROW OF A BONE was released earlier this year to critical acclaim and the band has announced plans to tour with Deftones this summer, after a successful North American headlining tour earlier this year. DIR EN GREY’s unforgettable live show has won them numerous U.S. fans starting with their SXSW appearance in 2006 and continuing as one of the main stage acts on last year’s Family Values Tour.
The band launched their month-long North American leg of their “INWARD SCREAM” tour in February and sold out a number of venues in major cities including New York (Nokia Times Square Theatre), Los Angeles (The Wiltern LG), Chicago (House of Blues), San Francisco (The Fillmore), Minneapolis (Fine Line Music Club), Atlanta (Roxy Theatre) and Toronto (House of Blues). In a 2/21/07 advance feature, the Los Angeles Times wrote that “Dir En Grey, with its unusual rhythmic interplay and ability to catapult a listener between the worlds of Alice Cooper and Charles Aznavour, resonates in memory like a living mystery. Call it depth.” Elsewhere, the Dallas Morning News stated that DIR EN GREY “threatens to invade metal's American sanctum as no other heavy Japanese act has as it's become a truly original live act.” (2/21/07)
The buzz in America for DIR EN GREY–KYO (voice), KAORU (guitar), DIE (guitar), TOSHIYA (bass) and SHINYA (drums)–started with the release of 2006’s Withering to death., which was named one of the Top 10 Hard Rock & Metal albums of 2006 by Amazon.com. The video for album track “Saku” was also named #1 video of 2006 by Revolver, in conjunction with MTV2’s Headbanger’s Ball.
Here’s a sampling of additional praise the band has received recently:
“Absolutely amazing.”
“Kyo is a staggering vocalist. His melodies soar above the racket with an authority that recalls Iron Maiden's Bruce Dickinson, substituting twisted humanity for Dickinson's battle ax. Kyo also has stockpiled an extreme range of vocal inflections, from a guttural mutter to a tonsil-ripping scream—no electronic effects needed. Just as important during the band's live show, you can't take your eyes off his compact frame as he flexes pecs, declaims from atop a speaker bank or, like a black hole, crouches to draw the light into the gravity of his despair.”
“(Dir en grey) are more powerful now than ever, and they’ve embarked on a full-on assault of America. Their videos are edited with seizure-inducing precision, cramming together images that would make Björk and her visual-artist partner, Matthew Barney, weep with envy."
“The Osaka-based band eases between death metal, thrash, goth, glam, and straight-ahead hard rock with a fluidity that often is like watching an object shape-shift before your eyes. The group also maintains its image with rare poise and control on stage, allowing its ghoulish fashion sense to underscore and heighten the music's drama without veering into silliness. Hooks, atmospheres, evocative chord progressions, and nimble changes — not to mention equally elastic vocals that range from grunts to melodies to moans and groans — together become impossible to overshadow with visuals.”
“…the group's brand of extreme metal is a model of musicianship. The production is as crisp as new currency, and the thrash power-riffing throbs like a carotid artery awaiting puncture… one of the greatest joys of Marrow, aside from the tight playing, are the songs' winding structures…”
