With final preparations underway for the April 30 Broadway debut of “9-5: The Musical,” and the impending March 23 Cracker Barrel Collector’s Edition release of DOLLY PARTON’s BACKWOODS BARBIE album, a video for the album’s title track has hit the airwaves. In just a few short weeks, the video has already ascended to # 6 on the CMT Chart. Next week, the clip will enter the CMT Top 20 Countdown at #17.
Shot by award-winning director Trey Fanjoy, the grainy black and white clip–with a startling use of color–contrasts images of DOLLY on gritty streets of Hollywood in present day against an image of a childhood DOLLY dreaming of her life as a “Backwoods Barbie.” The clip is interspersed with images of a motherly figure watching the young DOLLY frolicking in her trademark “coat of many colors” and humble beginnings in the East Tennessee hills to DOLLY today as she encounters a colorful mix of characters on the streets of Hollywood.
“The song ‘Backwoods Barbie’ pretty much says it all,” DOLLY says of the track, the fourth single from the BACKWOODS BARBIE CD (Dolly Records). “It’s true that the way I look is just a country girl’s idea of glamour. I’ve always been a bit of a cartoon character, but that comes from an honest place. I’m always getting too dolled up. My real name is Dolly, so I’m just a backwoods Dolly asking for a chance.”
“Backwoods Barbie” will also be featured as one of the songs for the “9 to 5: The Musical,” for which the iconic American singer, songwriter, film star and entrepreneur wrote all the music and lyrics (marking yet another career first for the unstoppable legend). The show was in previews in Los Angeles last Fall at the Ahmanson Theatre. At the 40th annual Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Awards held this past Monday (March 16), Dolly was honored with an award for “Musical Score” for “9 to 5: The Musical.”
Meanwhile, a new Collector’s Edition of DOLLY’s BACKWOODS BARBIE will go on sale exclusively at all Cracker Barrel locations on March 23. The collector’s edition–with new photos and artwork–will also feature three never before heard tracks (“Rose of My Heart,” “Hallelujah Holiday,” and “Berry Pie”) which were selected by DOLLY herself from her extensive catalog. Originally released in February 2008, the BACKWOODS BARBIE album entered the Top 200 Albums chart at #17 and at #2 on both the Country Album and Indie Album charts and marks DOLLY’s highest album debut ever on the Billboard pop albums chart, and first entry into the Top 20 since 1993’s Slow Dancing With The Moon. The critically acclaimed album has already featured three singles: “Better Get To Livin,’” “Jesus & Gravity” and “Shinola.”
