THIS PAST SATURDAY
This is a big moment for DREAM THEATER, who are armed with their 11th studio album A DRAMATIC TURN OF EVENTS, one of the most powerful efforts of their storied, iconic career.
Launching their North American tour this past weekend with a pair of California shows in San Francisco (September 24, The Warfield) and Los Angeles (September 25, Nokia Theater), the influential progressive metal masters have strongly impacted the album charts globally with A DRAMATIC TURN OF EVENTS (Roadrunner), landing no less than 14 Top 10 debuts around the world including the U.S. where it enters this week at #8. The album also enters at #1 on the Billboard Tastemaker Albums Chart.
This marks the band’s second Top 10 album chart debut in a row, as 2009’s Black Clouds & Silver Linings also debuted in the Top 10 at the #6 position.
A DRAMATIC TURN OF EVENTS enters at #1 in Finland, at #2 in Holland, at #3 in Italy, Germany, Japan and Sweden and at #9 in Canada as well as #1 on the Rock Album Charts in the UK. The numbers say it all, and that’s not to mention the fact that DREAM THEATER have sold over 10 million albums and DVDs combined through the course of their career.
Meanwhile, the band’s video for “On The Backs of Angels” is the #1 most-streamed video on Yahoo! Music (for the week of Oct. 1st). This past summer, DREAM THEATER were named in Rolling Stone’s Top 10 Prog Rock Bands of All Time via a readers poll.

A DRAMATIC TURN OF EVENTS is drawing early praise
“Dream Theater returns with A Dramatic Turn Of Events. Marking the debut of new drummer Mike Mangini, the album is an evocative collection of fully-realized soundscapes that stands alongside landmark Dream Theater albums like Images And Words and Scenes From A Memory with an even greater prestige, ambition and cunning. It strikes the perfect balance between the band’s intimate history with all that is heavy, progressive and melodic, each element fully realized. Over twenty-five years since their formation, Dream Theater continues to cultivate, curate and protect their status as worldwide niche tastemakers on this, their eleventh studio album, which was produced by the band’s own John Petrucci and mixed by sonic magician Andy Wallace.”
— DRUMHEAD, September 2011
“Dream Theater have done exactly what they needed to do with this album. John Petrucci’s production is fantastic … This is classic Dream Theater, and it’s their best for many years. ”
— ALTSOUNDS.COM, September 16, 2011
“…a firm standing in the new age of Dream Theater with [new drummer] Mike Mangini on board.”
— Jesse Bauer, BLOGCRITICS.ORG, September 17, 2011
“…A Dramatic Turn Of Events is blessed with a slick and powerful sound, courtesy of John Petrucci and Andy Wallace. It really supports the symphonic character of this album…I haven’t enjoyed myself this much listening to a new DT record, since the release of Scenes From A Memory back in 1999. In short, this is a masterpiece.”
— Raymond, ALTERNATIVEMATTER.COM, September 6, 2011
“…Prog fans who dig Yes will be pleased to see that this one has a much larger keyboard presence…the melodic “Build Me Up, Break Me Down”, and the epic “Breaking All Illusions”…display the band’s best talents admirably.”
— Hunter Duesing, PARCBENCH.COM, September 16, 2011
“…another solid release for the band….Dream Theater is still crafting visceral yet intelligent progressive metal.”
