‘NOCTURNES’
LATE SPRING
U.S. TOUR BEGINS MARCH 13
For the follow-up to their 2008 debut album Common Reaction, GREY and HAILEY tap into old rock influences, making a conscious effort to embrace the beauty in imperfection, rather than put a high gloss shine over things like vocals and rhythms. "I feel like back then, the music I gravitated toward had a pulse and was mysterious and seductive," says GREY. "I wanted to bring some of that to the table, because I feel as though these days everyone has their cards on the table." The dreamy, shadowy subject matter, coupled with their late-night recording sessions, helped inform the title of the album, NOCTURNES. HAILEY and GREY passed the early recordings to producer and longtime friend Wendy Melvoin, formerly of Prince and the Revolution. She not only extended her opinion, but offered to help the band complete the album at her personal studio space, located within the famed Henson Studios compound in Los Angeles.
Mixed by Tchad Blake and mastered by Adam Ayan at Gateway, the album’s “Same High” was written for and is featured in the hotly-tipped film The Kids Are All Right. The film has gone on to receive four Academy Award nominations (“Best Picture,” “Best Actress,” “Best Supporting Actor” and “Best Screenplay”) as well as winning the Golden Globe Award for “Best Picture,” the top honor. The album’s "Criminal," with its opulent, harmonic synths and vocals,–typifies that attitude, as GREY purrs out her lament–“I told it to you straight, somehow you didn't hear a thing/It's sad, what a shame"–on top of lush Hammond B3 chords. Uptempo tracks like "Darkness Is" and "Disdain" push the envelope even further, showcasing a big rock sound that still has one high-heeled foot firmly planted in the sophisticated pop GREY (Keys, Guitar) and HAILEY (Keys, Bass) are known for.
For NOCTURNES, the group captured a live, massive and organic drum sound–something missing from Common Reaction—as drummer Josh Kane tracked his performances in Henson's A room on the same kit John Bonham used during the recording of "When The Levee Breaks." The results, especially on songs like "Wake To Sleep," "Criminal" and "Same High," typify the combination of beauty and aggression that UH HUH HER have harnessed on NOCTURNES, both lyrically and musically.
Formed in Los Angeles, UH HUH HER debuted to a packed house of industry heads, critics and fans, many of whom might have been more familiar with HAILEY’s character “Alice” on “The L Word”GREY, it was her first group project since tenure with the lo-fi indie-rock outfit Mellowdrone. Co-produced by GREY and Al ClayCommon Reaction was a full serving of new wave electro-pop that broke through with the anthemic single "Not A Love Song." The album went on to receive an overwhelming amount of critical praise, with the NEW YORK TIMES hailing the disc "…a lush, layered collection of dizzying, synth-driven pop" (Amanda Petrusich, 10/24/08) and the VILLAGE VOICE adding “Uh Huh Her’s debut album is a stylized mix of guitars and synthesizers framed by melancholic yet glamour-tinged vocals” (Zoe Gemelli, October 29-November 4). Elsewhere, the LOS ANGELES TIMES noted, "Uh Huh Her's sleek, synth-infused sound is closer to Adore-era Smashing Pumpkins or Metric than it is to the moody English alt-rocker (PJ Harvey). The band's debut album, is an electro-pop feast characterized by layers of overlapping vocals" (David Greenwald, 5/29/08). The ROLLING STONE coined them a “Sultry indie electro duo…” (Caryn Ganz, 10/23/08) and the NEW YORKER added, “…[Uh Huh Her] traffic in throbbing synth-pop that's destined to make mascara run” (Kelefa Sanneh, 10/24/08). SPIN added, “[Uh Huh Her] create a lush soundscape of lilting piano arrangements, percolating electronic threads, and sparkling vocals a la Metric and the now-defunct Organ” (Samantha Promisloff, 7/27/08).
