EVERCLEAR will launch the July 11 release of their Capitol CD SONGS FROM AN AMERICAN MOVIE, VOL. I: LEARNING HOW TO SMILE with various high-profile appearances and performances. First, they'll perform their current Top 5 Modern Rock hit "Wonderful" Monday, July 10 on NBC-TV's "The Tonight Show." The following morning, KROQ will broadcast a special three-song live performance by EVERCLEAR— songwriter/singer/guitarist ART ALEXAKIS, drummer GREG EKLUND and bassist CRAIG MONTOYA–from a Burbank, CA 7-Eleven (a location that befits the album's 7/11 release date). Next, Art Alexakis will return as a guest to ABC-TV's "Politically Incorrect" Friday, July 14. Finally, EVERCLEAR will give "Wonderful" the acoustic treatment on CBS-TV's "The Late, Late Show With Craig Kilborn" Friday, July 21. On the radio front, the group can also be heard next week on three nationally-syndicated radio shows: "Modern Rock Live" on Sunday, July 9, "Rockline" on Monday, July 10 and "Loveline" on Thursday, July 13. EVERCLEAR will also participate in a live AOL chat on July 10. Meanwhile, "Wonderful" continues to impact radio stations nationwide. The song (currently #3 with a bullet on Billboard's Modern Rock Tracks chart) was the #1 most added song at mainstream Top 40 radio, garnering first week airplay on over 120 stations nationwide. The "Wonderful" video (directed by ALEXAKIS) can be seen on both MTV and VH1. LEARNING HOW TO SMILE (Capitol Records) marks the first of two EVERCLEAR releases this year, with SONGS FROM AN AMERICAN MOVIE, VOL. TWO: GOOD TIME FOR A BAD ATTITUDE due out later this year. In the current issue of Spin magazine, RJ Smith praises LEARNING HOW TO SMILE as "…a ruminative, personal, poppy cycle of songs, decked out in horns and strings, that look back on the past with mixed emotions." A CMJ review by Matt Ashare adds, "What distinguishes Everclear from the blander late-'90s modern rock bands…is that Alexakis has always had something provocative to say, and Learning How To Smile draws from mixed emotions about his own recent divorce and growing up in a broken home. The soul-searching tone of 'Thrift Store Chair' is offset by a reminiscence about the good and bad ol' days, including 'AM Radio,' which segues cleverly into a successful cover of 'Brown Eyed Girl' and an amusing anatomy of a well-intentioned pick-up artist ('Unemployed Boyfriend'). EVERCLEAR are expected to tour after the release of the GOOD TIME FOR A BAD ATTITUDE CD this fall. Stay tuned for tour dates.
