EVERYTHING’S ‘ALRIGHT’ FOR
ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA:
FIRST SINGLE FROM ‘ZOOM’ ALBUM DUE IN EARLY MAY WITH
CD SET FOR RELEASE JUNE 12;
TOUR AND TELEVISION APPEARANCES TO FOLLOW
ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA will return to the airwaves in mid-May with “Alright,” the lead-off single from ZOOM, their first album of new material in 15 years on Epic. It’s now set for release June 12.
With its soaring harmonies and rocking guitars, “Alright” reflects the artistry and fresh attitude of ELO sonic architect JEFF LYNNE. “That’s a song about optimism–you know when things do get rough, you have to focus on one thing that you think’s great and it’ll help get you through it.”
ELO fans will have the chance to see the group live on a few high-profile TV specials (details TBA), to be followed by a major shed tour later this summer.
Written, produced and performed by LYNNE, ZOOM mixes many classic widescreen ELO elements-the layered harmonies, ringing guitars, melodic rushes, string arrangements and rootsy rock stylings-with the shimmering sonic touches he brought to other projects as a producer (George Harrison’s Cloud Nine; Tom Petty’s Full Moon Fever, Petty and The Heartbreakers’ Into The Great Wide Open; Roy Orbison’s hit “You Got It”) and as a member of the Traveling Wilburys, with Harrison, Bob Dylan, Orbison and Petty, on their two albums (1988’s Volume 1 and 1991’s Volume 3). LYNNE also worked with the remaining Beatles on Anthology, producing the tracks “Free As A Bird” and “Real Love.” After that, he co-produced eight tracks on Paul McCartney’s Flaming Pie CD.
Of ZOOM, which also includes such songs as “State Of Mind,” “Stranger On A Quiet Street,” “Moment In Paradise” and “Really Doesn’t Matter At All,” LYNNE says the 15 years since the last ELO CD (1986’s BALANCE OF POWER) helped him focus: “Now that I can see it all from this distance, I wanted another go at it.”
