LOS ANGELES, June 21, 2000 – Steady touring and a series of stellar weeks at radio have helped push Papa Roach’s DreamWorks Records debut Infest to gold status, just over a month after its April 25 release. As Infest breaks into the Top 15 on Billboard’s Top 200 album chart this week at #12, SoundScanning over 97,000 copies, it’s clear Papa Roach are expanding their fan base through their intense live show and the success of their first radio single and video “Last Resort.” “The band’s roiling rhythms, barbed riffs and kick-drum-splitting beats take rap rock back to its roots in New York hardcore punk and D.C. Dischord bands like Fugazi,” said Rolling Stone’s Pat Blashill in a review of the album (July 6-20, 2000). He added: “Rock lyrics are all too rarely this direct and fearless.”
“Sometimes you think you’re the only one who feels a certain way,” says Papa Roach frontman Coby Dick. “We just want kids to know they’re not the only ones, that a lot of other people feel as bad and depressed and misunderstood and desperate as they do. We all have the same problems, but we’re also all in this together.” “Last Resort” continues to make an impact at mainstream and modern rock radio as it climbs up to #9 and #7 respectively on the Billboard charts. The song is #1 most-requested at KROQ (Los Angeles), Live 105 (San Francisco) KPNT (St. Louis) and KNDD (Seattle), and is receiving Top 5 phones at WXRK (New York) KXDX (Pittsburgh) and WBCN (Boston).
Meantime, the video for “Last Resort,” directed by Marcos Siega (Blink 182, Sevendust, P.O.D.), debuted on MTV’s Total Request Live at #7 its first week (with a peak TRL position at #5) and remains in rotation on the channel as a “Buzzclip.” The excitement continues as Papa Roach confirms their first national TV performance on Late Night With Conan O’Brien Friday, July 14. Elsewhere in the press, the album–produced by Jay Baumgardner (System Of A Down, Coal Chamber, Slipknot)–was described by Steve Morse in the Boston Globe (June 8, 2000) as “a knockout-a heavyweight combination of in-your-face guitar with a rock-rap fusion…The hit is ‘Last Resort,’ a remarkable slab of desperation in which Dick complains about emotional suffocation (‘I’m losing my mind…wish somebody would tell me I’m fine’), but then battles right through it. He fights demon alcohol in ‘Binge,’ rails against ‘money’ and ‘possessions’ in ‘Between Angels and Insects,’ and urges the listener to ‘forget your emptiness’ and accept that change is a part of life. The production is superb, while nearly every song gets under your skin.”
Out on tour since February, P-Roach’s Coby Dick (vocals), Jerry Horton (guitar), Tobin Esperance (bass) and David Buckner (drums) will next head out on the Vans Warped Tour, launching June 23 in Fresno, CA. And look for the band to infest cities across the U.S. through the remainder of 2000.
