PAPA ROACH’S PLATINUM INFEST VAULTS TO BILLBOARD TOP 5;
VIDEO FOR MODERN ROCK #1 “LAST RESORT” GETS MTV AWARD NOD
LOS ANGELES, July 28, 2000 – Continuing its no-holds-barred assault on Billboard’s Top 200 album chart, Papa Roach’s platinum Infest (DreamWorks Records) hits #5 this week, a period that saw more than 135,000 copies sold. Papa Roach have further staked their territory with an MTV Video Music Award nomination for Best New Artist In A Video for “Last Resort,” the first radio track off Infest. (The awards will be broadcast Sept. 7.)
P-Roach’s recognition by the video network is not surprising considering the groundbreaking clip for “Last Resort” has been a Top 5 favorite on MTV’s “Total Request Live” since shortly after its debut (it has also logged time at #1 on The Box). Moreover, “Last Resort” is omnipresent at radio, with Top 5 phones coming in to Los Angeles’ KROQ, New York’s WXRK, Boston’s WBCN and Washington, D.C.’s WHFS. This kind of airplay has powered “Last Resort” to the #1 spot on Billboard’s Modern Rock Tracks chart (the song is #3 and #6 on the magazine’s Active Rock and Mainstream Rock charts, respectively). Next up from Infest is “Broken Home,” the video for which will reunite Papa Roach with “Last Resort” director Marcos Siega (who has also worked with Blink 182, Sevendust and P.O.D). The shoot is scheduled to take place in L.A. during the first week of August.
According to outspoken P-Roach frontman Coby Dick, “Broken Home” is “about divorce and being the kid caught in the middle, feeling it’s your fault but finally realizing it isn’t.” Dick elaborates with typical candor: “This was hard for me to write. I was working with a vocal coach and he had me sing it. With the band, I’m concentrating on getting it tight, but when I was with the vocal coach, halfway though the first verse, I fell out crying. All that was there were the words, and obviously, it still fucks with me. I was six when my parents got divorced. I didn’t talk to my dad until two years ago. We’ve kinda made amends, but something like that doesn’t really go away. Lyrically, P-Roach is my counseling.”
Indeed, Dick’s honesty has forged a hard-and-fast connection with Papa Roach’s fans. Allstar reported of a recent show: “From the moment the band began their hard-driving set, the crowd was charged with an energy that can best be described as revolutionary. Coby Dick commanded, ‘Put up your fuckin’ heavy metal horns – you know what this shit is about!’ and several thousand fingers immediately went up in the air. Songs like ‘Broken Home’ are filled with an emotion that expresses the spirited passion of Generation Y, and Papa Roach is their voice” (June 26, 2000).
Dick, guitarist Jerry Horton, bassist Tobin Esperance and drummer David Buckner have been bringing their fire to the Vans Warped Tour for the past three weeks. The quartet will now embark on a month-long trek with Korn and Powerman 5000 that will take them through August (see info below). They will follow these dates with a headlining club tour, featuring (hed)p.e. and Taproot, set to kick off on the East Coast. P-Roach are also tentatively planning a jaunt with Limp Bizkit and Eminem. They will appear on “Late Show With David Letterman” Aug. 28.
