GEORGE THOROGOOD & THE DESTROYERS
ENJOY DUAL BILLBOARD MAGAZINE HONORS IN 2005:
‘TOP BLUES ARTIST’ AND ‘TOP BLUES ALBUM’;
NEW ALBUM AND TOUR DATES ON TAP FOR 2006
As GEORGE THOROGOOD & THE DESTROYERS gear up for a new blues album and extensive tour in 2006, the band’s career retrospective GEORGE THOROGOOD: 30 YEARS OF ROCK has been certified Gold by the R.I.A.A. and was just named the #1 top Blues Album of the year by Billboard magazine, which also crowned the band the #1 Top Blues Artist of 2005. Featuring hits from throughout the brash and iconic Destroyers’ illustrious 30 years in the music business, the album has been a chart fixture since its May 18, 2004 release, holding the #1 spot for 42 weeks in 2005, and it’s still #1 on the current Blues chart.
THOROGOOD & co. stayed busy on the road in 2005 as well, performing 90 shows in 113 days, including runs through Canada, New Zealand and Australia. There are already 30 shows on the calendar for 2006, kicking off with a month of U.S. shows March 2 in Oklahoma, with an 11-date trek through the U.K. and Europe slated for May 28-June 11.
2006 will see an album of new material from the singer/guitarist/songwriter. THOROGOOD has been in the studio recording with longtime collaborator Tom Hambridge, where they are writing new material and giving the signature THOROGOOD treatment to songs from blues legends including Hound Dog Taylor, John Lee Hooker, Jimmy Reed and others.
Of his enduring popularity, THOROGOOD takes it all in stride. He told Rolling Stone, "We've plugged away and here we still are 30 years later. That's longer than Henry Aaron played baseball. Water finds its own level, and the Destroyers have found the right songs and we have a really good solid thing going. I'm looking to sustain that, just like your health. There's the Dick Van Dykes of the world and the Jerry Van Dykes. I'm a Jerry Van Dyke, but I make a living. If Springsteen is the Boss, then I'm the janitor. And a janitor never gets fired” (3/10/04).
