LAST NIGHT IN D.C.: TOM PETTY AND THE HEARTBREAKERS performed last night (December 13) at Vice President Al Gore’s home, only one hour after Gore’s national address. PETTY and his bandmates, who are in town to tape the TNT “A Very Special Christmas from Washington, D.C.” television special at the White House tonight, performed a one-hour set which included their classics “American Girl” (at the request of Gore himself) and “I Won’t Back Down.” TOM was joined on vocals by Jon Bon Jovi and Blues Traveler’s John Popper on harmonica, while Tipper Gore played percussion throughout. Later on, TOM sang with Stevie Wonder. Meanwhile, the “Very Special Christmas from Washington, D.C.” special will air December 19 at 8:00 PM ET/PT on TNT. The concert special is the second live event and ensuing telecast of performances by music artists who are from “A Very Special Christmas” series of benefit albums. Royalties from the sales of these music albums, bearing inspirational Keith Haring artwork, have raised more than $65 million for Special Olympics Programs around the world.
