As 2001 comes to a close, LIFEHOUSE have impressively built upon Rolling Stone's mid-year declaration that they've "become the most successful new band of the year" (David Wild, June 7, 2001). Coming off their BDS (Broadcast Data Systems) honor of radio's "Most Spun Song Of The Year" for their smash "Hanging By A Moment," the group have received accolades from all of the season's major award shows on the strength of the song and their double platinum debut NO NAME FACE (DreamWorks). The Los Angeles-based band also took time off recently to film the video for the current single "Breathing."
LIFEHOUSE–singer/guitarist JASON WADE, bassist SERGIO ANDRADE, drummer RICK WOOLSTENHULME–took home "Song of The Year/Pop Alternative Radio" at October's Radio Music Awards (where they performed on the ABC-TV special) while reeling in the "Hot 100 Single of The Year," "New Artist of The Year" and "Rock New Artist of The Year" honors from the Billboard Music Awards. Meanwhile, the band performed December 2 at the My VH1 Awards pre-show–an acoustic medley of "Hanging By A Moment" and "Breathing"–where they were nominated for two awards in the most-played song and new artist categories. LIFEHOUSE have also been nominated for the American Music Awards' "Favorite New Artist-Pop or Rock 'n Roll" at the January 9 ceremony.
LIFEHOUSE recently shot a video in Los Angles with director Marcos Siega for their current single "Breathing," a mid-tempo track that merges WADE's deep introspection with a lush chorus of comforting sentiments that highlight his rich baritone. In the video, WADE takes a surreal ride in the back of a taxi, watching people go on with their everyday routines. Every so often, a person will look back at WADE and catch him off guard by singing along with the song. At one point, WADE even sees himself strolling down a sidewalk singing the tune. The video's finale finds LIFEHOUSE performing an intimate evening concert on a rooftop for all of the people that joined in singing "Breathing" that day.
WADE continues to work on new material for the follow-up to NO NAME FACE. In a recent Guitar World Acoustic feature (Fall issue), he spoke about the creative process and how "it's easy to write pop songs that have no emotion, where people will just say, 'Oh, that's a catchy tune.'" As a songwriter who goes below the surface to uncover truths, WADE adds that "if you want to have longevity, you have to put a little bit more of yourself into the music." At the band's My VH1 Awards rehearsal (November 30), he told MTV.com the new album will be "a lot more up-tempo than this last one."
