Q&A WITH FESTIVAL FOUNDERS
SCOTT OSBURN & HANK KELLER OF HIGHLAND CONCERTS
Organizers for LIGHTS ALL NIGHT–Texas’ largest New Year’s Eve party set for Thursday, December 31 and Friday, January 1-have announced it will now take place at Dallas Market Hall (2200 Stemmons Frwy, Dallas). The event features headliners Hardwell, Kaskade, Porter Robinson, Flosstradamus and over 50 other top international festival acts and emerging local talents.
Here is a Q&A with LIGHTS ALL NIGHT founders Scott Osburn and Hank Keller ofHighland Concerts:
Q: Over LIGHTS ALL NIGHT’S five years, you have taken place at a few different locations in Dallas. This year you are now heading to the Dallas Market Hall. What prompted you to move from the Convention Center?
SCOTT OSBURN (SO): Over the last six years we have had one goal: create the most over-the-top NYE experience possible. Every year we are looking for the perfect venue, largest production, top musical acts and best experience. After years of using this criteria, we finally received the opportunity to work with Dallas Market Hall. DMH has been producing a NYE event at the space for years, and the opportunity wasn’t available. We just recently found out that the space was available and were able to strike a deal with the venue. After flying in our full team to build the site including production, safety and “experience curators,” we know we are onto something great and have never been more excited as we believe we have found the long term home for Lights All Night.
Q: Tell us more about the site and what your team will be doing to enhance what’s already in place.
HANK KELLER (HK): Every year we have made a point to create a visual experience that is at the top of its class in the Dallas market. We also put a lot of emphasis into the site layout and ease of access for different parts of our event. This year we have an ability to create a production that is much larger and will encompass much more of the space than in years past. Our main stage production and room set up will be the largest in our history. Also, with the set up of our second stage we are able to create a production that will make the fan feel as though they’ve entered another world.
Q: Let’s talk a little more about LIGHTS ALL NIGHT’s line-up, which acts are you all looking forward to seeing?
SO: This is one of the most exciting lineups we’ve booked in years. Kaskade is and will always be a Texas favorite. His ability to choreograph a party with big room hits as well as deep house favorites is what makes him a master of his craft. There are a lot of standouts for sure this year, including headliner Hardwell who was named the #1 DJ in the world in both 2013 and 2014 as well as Porter Robinson and Flosstradamus as our co-headliners. All of these acts bring such a strong audience base and eclectic vibe to the show that none are to be missed. The up and comers this year are having huge break out years including Jauz, whose set will be absolutely massive. Other artists I’m really excited for include Galantis, Claude VonStroke and Big Gigantic. The most notable local act I can’t wait to see is Colton Carlyle. He has had a big year in Dallas and has received industry wide attention with some of his songs being played by top DJ’s at clubs across the country. Moral of the story is come early and stay late because the music is on point this year!
Q: Why do you think fans continue to return, establishing year after year that LIGHTS ALL NIGHT is the largest electronic music festival in all of Texas?
SO: We hope that fans continue to return because we are able to provide an unmatched experience over the NYE time period. LAN has been fortunate to have the ability to host some of the most amazing musical talent that is offered in the world. Our team has been working for years to refine the experience, refine the musical offerings and create an experience that is unique.
Q: LIGHTS ALL NIGHT is taking place this year over NYE. Why do you think Dallas is the best place to spend your holiday?
HK: Over the years we have seen about 25% of our audience travels from outside the state of Texas to attend LAN. For one we usually find that the weather is a little nicer down south during NYE, but also become Dallas has done a tremendous job becoming an entertainment hub worth traveling to. For those looking for an exciting and upscale NYE weekend experience Dallas has it all with great hotels, an eclectic offering of restaurants and a nightlife that has something for everyone. We think as we continue this journey of creating unique NYE moments with LAN that Dallas will be right there with us to make a memorable weekend for all.
Q: Getting to LIGHTS ALL NIGHT for out of towners is very easy. For those visiting for the first time, what are some things they can do when the festival is not happening?
SO: The DFW Metroplex has an endless amount of activities that anyone can enjoy. The restaurant scene in Dallas is forever growing and nothing short of exciting. There’s plenty to choose from including BBQ, Mexican food, American casual to upscale. Deep Ellum is a very unique and arts centric area that has seen a resurgence in the last two years, including music venues, bars and cool retail shops. We have world-class malls, museums and historical landmarks that will keep anyone busy for an afternoon before the shows. There’s something for everyone in Dallas.
Q: What have been some of your favorite moments from past LIGHTS ALL NIGHT festivals?
HK: Lights All Night has lent itself to some pretty incredible end of the year moments in the last six years. I have a handful of moments that I can remember like they were yesterday. In 2010 Ghostland Observatory playing the first-ever every LAN for 6,000 people on top of a covered ice skating rink inside the atrium of a hotel/office complex that was fifteen stories high. Tiesto in 2011 was our first major international headliner. His set was so powerful that you didn’t want to leave. In 2012 at Fair Park I don’t think anyone will ever forget Bassnectar and Calvin Harris playing back to back. Everyone showed up at the beginning of Calvin’s set and not one person left until Bassnectar’s set was over. It was truly a moment I will never forget. One last notable set was Major Lazer in 2013. Diplo has and always will know how to throw a party in the Big D, and 2013 was no exception.
Q: When people walk away from this year’s LIGHTS ALL NIGHT, what do you want them to remember?
SO: This year is our most highly anticipated year yet. Being back on NYE just feels right, and we are definitely seeing the positive response from our fans. We have been so lucky to move to Dallas Market Hall and I hope that people feel the same when they see the quality of the show that we do. NYE is a time for new beginnings and an opportunity to celebrate life with friends and loved ones. We work so hard every year to ensure that this moment is special for every guest that attends Lights All Night. I hope that old and new fans love what we’ve put together and leave with memories that last forever and immediately start looking forward to the next Lights All Night.
