Colorful surrealistic touches—matched with a freewheeling sense of joy—light up “Strawberry Street,” the new video by singer-songwriter-violinist extraordinaire LILI HAYDN. It’s now posted at www.myspace.com/lilihaydn and http://nettwerk.com/media/mov/LilHa_StrSt.mov.
To create the video for the song—taken from her new and third album PLACE BETWEEN PLACES (Nettwerk)—LILI joined forces with Roko Belic, the Academy Award-nominated director for the film Genghis Blues. It was shot at a soundstage as well as on the streets of East Hollywood in Los Angeles, where LILI, armed with her violin like a pied piper, leads a group of revelers who are all looking to achieve a transcendent state of mind.
LILI recently performed “Strawberry Street” on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” (March 31, on the eve of the album’s April 1 release). And, LILI performed at Coachella (Sunday, April 27) with Roger Waters, singing and playing violin on two songs. She joined Waters for his recent song “Leaving Beirut” and, as rollingstone.com noted, “Waters’ night ended with songs from The Wall, with fiery virtuosic soloing by violinist Lili Haydn taking over Gilmour’s original leads on “Comfortably Numb.” To view LILI’s Coachella performance with Waters, go here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MbUvnX0aguo
On the concert front, LILI and her band will join Cyndi Lauper, the B-52’s, Joan Jett and The Blackhearts, Wanda Sykes and host Carson Kressley for the “True Colors Tour” in Houston on June 21 and June 22 in Dallas on June 22. LILI will perform songs from PLACE BETWEEN PLACES, described by J. Rentilly in a 4/28/08 Music Connection cover story as “hypnotic, haunting and soulful.” In another cover story (in Los Angeles’ weekly CityBeat, 4/24/08), Arrissia Owen Turner noted: “On her most recent recording, Haydn truly shines while unleashing her emotional intensity.”
Elsewhere, Jim Fusilli of the Wall Street Journal has written: “…the album is neither a modern alt-pop nor a bold instrumental album. It's both. Imagine what music Norah Jones or Fiona Apple and avant-garde violinists like Carla Kihlstedt or Jenny Scheinman would produce if they inhabited one body and mind” (4/2/08).
A committed humanitarian and activist, LILI will perform at the Human Rights Watch benefit “Cries From The Heart” on June 1 at the Henry Fonda Theater. Powerful performances of selected writings and Human Rights Watch-collected testimonies will bring to life the courage of women who face injustice and fight for basic freedoms around the world. Performers also include Anne Archer and Noah Wyle. Next, on June 8, LILI will perform at the “What A Pair” Breast Cancer Research Foundation event at the Orpheum Theater in downtown Los Angeles, joining Joely Fisher, Lea Thompson and others.
