“…a weird mix of cabaret, burlesque, Mexican Luchador wrestling with a live DJ, crowd interaction and commentary…Depending on the night, people like Drew Carey turn up to do commentary for it. It is the most bizarre experience. The entire audience is dressed up and it’s like Halloween, everyone is in some weird costume. It was the greatest night of entertainment I have probably seen in my entire life.”
— Australian talk show star Rove McManus (9/16/2011)
LUCHA VaVOOM–the gloriously unhinged mix of Mexican-style lucha libre wrestling, traditional burlesque and blow-by-blow comedic commentary–will blur the lines between reality and fantasy this Halloween with two shows at the Mayan Theatre in downtown Los Angeles: Wednesday, October 26 and Thursday, October 27.
Madness will definitely court frenzy with luchadores (the “Liberace of lucha libre” Cassando, Pirata Morgan, Dirty Sanchez and Animaniac), a contortion team (NYC’s astonishing Trixie Little and the Evil Hate Monkey), tassel-twirling sex kittens (eye-popping aerialist Lucy Fur and pole temptress Leigh Acosta), and no-holds-barred comedians. It all adds up to an unforgettable experience that will coerce the audience’s most demented desires.
The brainchild of founders/co-producers Rita D’Albert and Liz Fairbairn, LUCHA VaVOOM celebrated its 9th anniversary (anniversary film here: http://tinyurl.com/5tufdla) this past August. The Huffington Post’s Katie Bain channeled her experience here:
“The evening had the feel of an unhinged circus, as an increasingly rowdy crowd, (which included ‘Cheech and Chong’ legend Cheech Marin), watched the rudos (the ‘bad guy’ wrestlers) take on the tecnicos (the ‘good’ guys) in bouts that were equal parts comedic jest and brilliantly choreographed feats of costumed athleticism.” (9/19/11).
“This isn’t about reality,” exclaims founder/producer Rita D’Albert. “It’s escapism in its purist form…I feel like I’ve done my job when the people in the audience see a little mini chicken who last night was a ghost version of himself because it’s Halloween.”
Fans can win ringside tickets by uploading their photos to LUCHA VaVOOM’s Flickr page. The LUCHA VaVOOM founders say that three categories of photos will be accepted: photos of you with a celebrity at LUCHA VaVOOM, you and your friends (or “drunk strangers”) at LUCHA VaVOOM or you being the best dressed at LUCHA VaVOOM. The contest runs through October 7.
Tickets available online or at these fine stores:

–Here’s a sampling of what the press has to say:
“LUCHA VaVOOM has a big future.”
Time Magazine
“… It’s enough to make even the most jadedHollywoodinsider jump up and yell ‘Smackdown.’”
Rolling Stone
“LUCHA VaVOOM is the most exciting, bonkers show I’ve seen in ages.”
The FACE (U.K.)
“A madcap mix of Mexican wrestling, comedy, and vintage burlesque. I love, love, love it.”
Vanity Fair
“With this perfectly balance evening of sex, comedy & comicbook violence, the populace of earth deserves nothing less than a global tour. Everyone needs a little LUCHA VaVOOM in their life.”
Bizarre (U.K.)
“Remember when rock was dangerous?…Remember when a performance was so full of surprises you could not help but gasp, ‘Did that just happen that?’ Lucha VaVoom, a Mexican wrestling burlesque comedy event, brought all that and more. The Mayan Theatre in Downtown Los Angeles was transformed for the sold-out show, which featured three wrestling matches (my favorite was Li’l Chicken and his crew, there is nothing cooler than a bad ass chicken) and four burlesque shows by some of the best dancers I’ve ever seen….There is truly no event like it out there today.”
