MIRANDA and her full-backing band–Kirk Hellie (bass), Rick Parker (guitars), Kevin Stevens (drums) and Ben Peeler (pedal steel guitar)–will perform every Tuesday in February at 11:00pm at Spaceland (1717 Silver Lake Blvd. Los Angeles, CA 90026). In addition, MIRANDA will be adding new players and elements to the shows each week. For the residency, MIRANDA hand-picked the bill which features Los Angeles indie favorites as well as a few up-and-coming artists: February 3: Magic Mirror, The Shore, EXITMUSIC; February 10–official record release show–: Whispering Pines, Lower Heaven, Nick Jago (of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club); February 17: The Moon Upstairs, The Chapin Sisters and Big Search; February 24: Square On Square (former Marjorie Fair), He's My Brother She's My Sister, Quarter After and very special guests to be announced.
In touring news, MIRANDA will be heading to Austin for multiple shows during SXSW week, including a performance slot at Austin’s “Psych Fest” on Sunday, March 15 at 4:00pm at the Radio Room (508 East 6th St. Austin, TX 78701). Expect a full announcement of more SXSW shows soon.
In radio news, “Life Boat,” released last year in England as a vinyl single via Sonic Cathedral and which subsequently made its U.S. debut on the now defunct Indie 103.1 FM, was featured on KCRW’s acclaimed “Morning Becomes Eclectic” and on WRBB in Boston multiple times last week. In addition, the album has been added to over 20 stations so far throughout the U.S.
Strong critical acclaim is pouring in for LIGHT OF X, for which MIRANDA teamed with producer Rick Parker (Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Von Bondies). Q magazine in the U.K. hailed the haunting “Pictures of You” an essential track to download, with reviewer Andy Fyfe noting:
“…when some darkness descends, as on ‘Pictures of You,’ her perky nature adds a bittersweet twist to the added emotional weight” (March, 2009).
Angeleno magazine declared Miranda a breakthrough artist and pegged LIGHT OF X a must- own indie album of 2009. As writer Laura Schooling explained:
“A mash-up of Mazzy Star’s etherealness and Lucinda Williams’ folksy lyricism creates a composite of wind, sea and cotton-soft tracks that have a familiar, time-tested feeling. This Cali-coastal coolness is something Richards refers to as ‘Psychedelic Chamber Folk Rock’ equally soothing as the sun’s breaking or setting” (January 2009).
MIRANDA’s star continues to rise as an artist to watch in ’09. The Boston Globe included her in their “Nine to Watch 2009” profile, with James Reed noting:
“In 2001, Richards made a dreamy little pop record that hardly anyone heard, but it'll be hard to ignore her when her sophomore release, LIGHT OF X (Nettwerk), arrives Feb. 10. The boho-chic California native really honed her sound in the interim, even if she rarely stays in one spot for long on the new album. One minute she sounds like a sun-kissed pop chanteuse, the next she's channeling a dusky torch singer reminiscent of Cat Power. Miranda wrote all the songs on ‘X,’ but her supporting cast brings a wealth of obvious influences: drummer Keith Mitchell (Mazzy Star), bassist Eva Gardner (Mars Volta), and guitarist Josh Schwartz (Beachwood Sparks)” (Sunday, January 11, 2009).
Elsewhere, Andrew Leahey of The Washington Times pegged her as one of “4 To Watch in 2009”:
“Miranda Lee Richards-This songbird grew up amid the bohemia of 1970s San Francisco, which fed her adoration for folk ballads and psychedelic rock. LIGHT OF X mixes those genres with a woozy hand, yielding a number of lilting, echoing gems. Look for the album on February 10–just in time to combat the winter doldrums with hazy California folk” (December 29, 2008).
Writing in O (Oprah Magazine), Scott Frampton declared:
"The soft but assured vocals of Miranda Lee Richards cast a glow upon the delicate, 60's inspired folk-pop on her new CD, LIGHT OF X (Nettwerk). The chiming guitars, strings and piano shine with a melancholy dreaminess, and so do Richards's lyrics (Finally, there's something/I can hold onto that isn't broken)" (February 2009).
