MÖTLEY CRÜE.
As MÖTLEY CRÜE wind down a spectacular summer U.S. trek, the iconic group has landed at #4 on this week’s Billboard “Hot Tours” chart, marking their fifth charting position since the tour launch on June 24. The 48-city tour has packed amphitheaters and arenas all summer long, grossing over $10.7 million and 197,000 in attendance from the first 20 shows alone. The legendary group’s combination of hit songs (all fan-picked), over-the-top showmanship with pyro, state-of-the-art sound and visual effects–including “The 360” drum coaster–have made the tour a must-see show, drawing rave reviews from fans and tastemakers nationwide (see critical soundbites below).
This Saturday, August 20, MÖTLEY CRÜE will bring their raucous stage show including “The 360” drum coaster (see video footage below) for their headlining performance at the Sunset Strip Music Festival (www.ssmf.com) live on Sunset Boulevard (which is closed to traffic between Doheny Drive and San Vicente Boulevard). Following their performance at the SSMF, the group will continue their global domination with an overseas trek to Australia and Japan (dates below). Watch TOMMY LEE’s 360 drum coaster in action here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m6ns70vUOug.
MÖTLEY CRÜE has commandeered the rock pantheon for over 30 years. In that time, they’ve accumulated worldwide album sales exceeding 80 million (25 million in the U.S.), seven platinum and/or multi-platinum albums, 22 Top 40 mainstream rock hits, six Top 20 pop singles, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, three Grammy nominations for Best Hard Rock Performance, a New York Times best-selling memoir, and over two dozen tours across the globe to date.
Here are critical live soundbites from MÖTLEY CRÜE’s summer U.S. tour:
"…Motley Crue delivered something that's been missing from live music for quite some time–a true arena rock show packed with all the right punches."
–Benjy Eisen, AOL SPINNER, (6/15/2011)
"Motley Crue never gets enough credit in the grand scheme, but the band's place in rock history was secured Tuesday with a mesmerizing homecoming concert at the Hollywood Bowl in a 30th anniversary celebration before a sold-out crowd of 18,000 screaming spectators."
–Gerry Gittleson, LA DAILY NEWS, (6/15/2011)
“…the fans ate it up, throwing their devil horns in the air, yelling hell yeah and f**k yeah right back to the hometown heroes. And for Crue, who told those the capacity crowd, “We’re your band, 30 years and we haven’t killed each other,” fully embracing their past glories was triumphant precisely because it was done in full. While personally they’ve evolved from the infamous characters described in The Dirt, when it comes to their music and onstage personas, they remain unapologetically debaucherous, fun-loving rock stars–an act they perform as well as anybody.”
–Steve Baltin, HOLLYWOOD REPORTER (6/16/11)
"At Crüe's newest road show of fire and a noisy set-list of songs chosen by fans, there was no sign of the acrimony that's sometimes broken the band apart over the decades–just a vivid celebration of their shared history. They reached across a mirrored piano to join hands during ‘Home Sweet Home,’ the kind of epic power ballad that was once essential in the days when hairspray dominated MTV. But most of their set was about tough hooks and pyro, from the grinding, roaring riffs ignited by guitarist Mick Mars on "Live Wire" to the spinning pentagram of ‘Shout at the Devil.’”
–Steve Appleford, ROLLING STONE.COM (6/15/2011)
“One of the biggest tours of the season, the triple glam rock assault of Motley Crue, Poison and the New York Dolls blew through town on Friday night to a sold-out Target Center. …Crue hammered through a generous and exhausting 90 minutes of pyro, fireworks, sexy back up singers and the long running tradition of drum solo insanity from Tommy Lee… Coming out of an encore of ‘Kickstart My Heart’ at the end of the night you could say they proudly are still kicking ass. A perfect night to kickoff another hot summer in the twin cities.”
— Danny Sigelman, MINNEAPOLIS CITY PAGES, June 27, 2011
“…a non-stop barrage of rock thuggery and expletive-laden exhortations from a group whose debt to punk speed and attitude and conventional hard rock has long since outstripped their early pretty-boy glam look.”
–Gil Kaufman, MTV NEWS, June 27, 2011
“The stage was Mad Max meets Sin City, a sort of post-apocalyptic amusement park with three story stripper poles, Nikki Sixx’s microphone hanging from a lighting rig and a drum riser that spit flames. The band was in solid form…”
–Dave Lake, SEATTLE WEEKLY, (8/15/11)
“A band that blows things up. A band that plays louder than most anyone else on the planet. If Poison is a comic book, Motley Crue is a graphic novel, dark and detailed. …Motley Crue hosted the kind of bright, massive and explosive rock show that barely exists any longer.”
–Ryan White, PORTLAND OREGONIAN, (8/12/11)
“A Crue show is a full frontal assault on the senses.”
–Sean Daly, ST. PETERSBURG TIMES, (7/7/11)
“Crue’s 85-minute set a hit-filled exposition of rock that weaved together strains of metal glam pop and punk atop grooves as fit for a strip club as they were for arenas.”
–Gary Graff, OAKLAND PRESS, (7/30/11)
“It goes without saying that a Motley Crue show is sure to be an explosive, expletive laden rollercoaster ride. But add in 30 years of debauchery, more than 80 million albums sold, an hour and a half of its biggest songs and an actual roller-coaster, it makes for one hell of a night indeed.”
–Nikki Mascali, THE WEEKENDER, July 31, 2011
“Rock anthem ‘Shout At The Devil’ was punctuated with bursts of hellishly hot flames that licked at the enthralled crowd.”
–Patrice Wilding, SCRANTON TIMES TRIBUNE, (August 1, 2011)
“The Crue is still more-fierce than the average glam-metal band–‘Live Wire’ being the best evidence—thanks to the driving rhythm section of Lee and Nikki Sixx, but also the guitar sorcery of Mick Mars. Whether it was the power ballad ‘Home Sweet Home’ or a rocker, like ‘Dr. Feelgood’ his solos were dosed with strange magic.”
–Scott Mervis, PITTSBURGH POST GAZETTE, July 25, 2011
“Celebrating the 30th anniversary of their debut album Too Fast For Love, the quartet of Los Angeles hard rock misfits crafted a loud and heavy set list based on the pre tour online fan voting that spanned from their debut single ‘Live Wire’ to the title track of ‘08’s Saints Of Los Angeles. …rife with arena-rock excess and heavy-metal debauchery, the concert had an intense light show, scantily clad female dancers and flames that shot from every corner of the stage. Oh and Lee’s drum riser also happened to be mounted to a 360-degree rollercoaster loop It carried him (and a fan pulled from the front row) upside down during his throbbing, industrial mid-set drum solo.”
–Erik Ernst, MILWAUKEE JOURNAL SENTINEL, June 26, 2011
“The Crue used its pyro arsenal to create a surprise attack on the unsuspecting 12,000 fans. …guitarist Mick Mars–back from battling bone disease–is alive and remains the backbone of the band. He shredded through ‘Shout At The Devil’ like a twenty-something six-string god and made ‘Dr. Feelgood’ feel great.”
–Chris Riemenschneider, MINNEAPOLIS STAR TRIBUNE, June 25, 2011
“There was rarely a dull moment with this tour’s stage craft, constantly fueled by wild imagery, intuitive lighting and a band that brachiated around it with clear delight. …The true triumph of Motley Crue is their sustained relevance. They are playing to crowded halls everywhere they go this summer, and young bands will forevermore see them as a springboard to a certain kind of rock.”
–Dennis Cook, JAMBASE.COM, June 15, 2011
“Onstage Tuesday night at Gexa Energy Pavillion, Lee strapped himself to the seat of his kit and never missed a beat during a wild, upside down ride. His riser was fastened to a huge ring that sent him into a gravity-defying spin. That was the most intense visual of a loaded show. …The Crue’s 90-minute performance was loud, riveting and eye-popping. …These guys go for maximum scream factor. The tunes were big, bombastic metal numbers with sing-along hooks such as ‘Too Young To Fall In Love,’ ‘Looks That Kill,’ and ‘Same Ole Situation (S.O.S.).’”
