NATIVE MUSIC ROCKS RECORDING ARTIST
MICKI FREE
JOINED ONSTAGE
BY ROLLING STONES’ BILL WYMAN
FOR MAINSTAGE PERFORMANCE
AT HYDE PARK’S
HARD ROCK CALLING
SATURDAY, JUNE 26
Grammy-winning singer, songwriter, musician and mixed blood (Cherokee & Comanche) Native American MICKI FREE and his band were joined by legendary Rolling Stones’ bassist Bill Wyman for their mainstage performance this past Saturday (June 26) at Hard Rock Calling festival in London’s Hyde Park.
The two meet at last year’s Hard Rock Calling show–where FREE and his band have performed at the past four consecutive shows–and kept in touch over the past year and FREE invited Wyman to join him this year. The performance, described by Absoluteradio.com as “the best double act of the weekend.” included the Rolling Stones’ “Jumpin Jack Flash” and Jimi Hendrix’s “Red House.” As the two told absoluteradio.com they are planning future collaborations including some possible recording down the road.
Next up for MICKI FREE: the release of his album MICKI FREE AMERICAN HORSE, due out today (Monday, June 28) in the U.K. and July 20 in the U.S. The 11-track disc showcases FREE’s fiery guitar and writing skills and the musical talents of his band, drummer Cindy Blackman (Lenny Kravitz, Rachel Z) and bassist David Santos (Billy Joel, John Fogerty). This album–the first in a series of NATIVE MUSIC ROCKS RECORDS releases due out in 2010 on Fontana/Universal–is generating an early critical buzz:
“Micki Free hearkens back to a better time when being a ‘Guitar Hero’ meant bleeding on six-strings, not bashing buttons on plastic. It wasn't that long ago when rock bands were measured by the strength of their songwriting and soloing rather than the tightness of their jeans and the straightness of their hair. Thankfully, there's Micki's American Horse—straight-forward, balls-out blues rock at its best. From the groove-laden stomp of ‘Wounded Knee’ to Micki's otherworldly interpretations of Jimi Hendrix classics, American Horse comes to life with every lick and lead.”
