CONTINUE TO GAIN NEW FANS AND CRITICAL PRAISE
ON FIRST NATIONAL TOUR OPENING FOR ROGER DALTREY
RELEASES PSYCHEDELIC VIDEO FOR SELF-TITLED TRACK
ANNOUNCE LOS ANGELES HEADLINE SHOW
DECEMBER 9 AT THE VIPER ROOM
PAPER ZOO–the Los Angeles four-piece band with a “psychedelic sound rooted in classic rock” (SeattlePI.com, 10/15) that is “at once heavy and atmospheric” (Louisville Eccentric Observer, 10/31/09)–continue to gain new fans and critical praise on their first national tour opening for the legendary Roger Daltrey. On the road in support of their debut EP–out now digitally via Custard and produced by Bigelf frontman Damon Fox and mixed by Alain Johannes (Queens of the Stone Age, Them Crooked Vultures)–the tour next hits New York City Friday, November 20 at the Nokia Theatre and wraps in Clearwater, FL Monday, November 30. See below for critical praise the band has received for both their live show and EP.
The heavily melodic and tantalizingly avant garde band has also released a new video for the self-titled track. Shot in Los Angeles in October, the video was directed by Adam Tillman-Young and can be viewed at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HT29d_aw7IY. An MP3 of the track is available for website use at: http://wearepaperzoo.com/download.
PAPER ZOO is Allister Izenberg, William Thomas Wesley II (bass), Monte Dyaami Najera (drums) and Martin Lopez (keys). The band began their now-six-year relationship with Damon Fox and multi-platinum singer/songwriter/producer and Custard label head Linda Perry via a chance encounter with Perry at a Guitar Center at the age of 13. The EP is a creation of rough demos recorded over the span of several visits to Linda's Kung Fu Gardens.
Recent PAPER ZOO Critical Quotes
“…Paper Zoo did a brilliant job of engaging the mixed-age crowd with a brand of koo-koo-ka-choo glam pop that sounded equally inspired by Paul McCartney and Freddie Mercury.”
–A.D. Amorosi, Philadelphia Inquirer, 11/16/09
“Combining vocals that fall somewhere between Freddie Mercury and Iggy Pop with an experimental spacey rock reminiscent of earlier Flaming Lips, Paper Zoo manage to create a singular sound that is at once heavy and atmospheric, equal parts Pink Floyd and Lounge Lizard swing. Somehow in all this strangeness, they are also the kind of band that writes a theme song for themselves: Join us/We are the paper zoo/ Join us/We’ve saved a place for you. They have a definite sound that matches their outfits (long hair, skinny flared jeans, open button-up shirts), and somehow they fit perfectly on a bill with ex-Who frontman Roger Daltrey.”
–Pawl Schwartz, Louisville Eccentric Observer, 10/31/09
“…if Wolfmother had taken more acid and smoked less weed and listened to Pink Floyd instead of Black Sabbath they might come close to sounding like Paper Zoo. The highlight of the group's set was ‘Paper Zoo,’ a deliciously demented Sgt. Pepper's-esque trip of a song that acts as both a proper theme song and proper introduction to the band… the band's psychedelic sound rooted in classic rock made them a perfect fit for Daltrey's power rock end of the musical spectrum.”
–Travis Hay, SeattlePI.com, 10/15/09
“…the amazing and innovative Paper Zoo. Their four-song EP Paper Zoo was truly mind blowing. The band’s sound defiantly channels old school British rock. From the first few notes of the track ‘Hollywood Recluse’ I felt as if I were listening to a rough cut from the Guess Who or Herman’s Hermits. It’s rare to find a band that can pull off proper psychedelic rock… Each track radiates with a pent up energy and passion. There is no ego in this band, just a love for the music.”
–Jordan Brandes, Lumino.com, 10/15/09
