PLANNING TO INFEST ON APRIL 25, PAPA ROACH LAUNCHES NATIONAL CLUB TOUR; “LAST RESORT” EXTERMINATING COMPETITION AT ACTIVE ROCK
LOS ANGELES, April 7, 2000 – Following a string of West Coast dates with Sevendust and Kittie, Papa Roach – Coby Dick (vocals), Jerry Horton (guitar), Tobin Esperance (bass) and Dave Buckner (drums) – are currently thrilling fans of aggressive rock with their own national club tour. The band’s major-label debut, Infest (DreamWorks Records) is set to bow April 25, 2000.
Produced by Jay Baumgardner (System Of A Down, Coal Chamber, Slipknot), Infest is a hybrid of hip-hop, hard-core and high-voltage rock ‘n’ roll. San Jose Metro writer Sarah Quelland testified, “The new album showcases the band’s infectious sound: a heavy melding of Limp Bizkit aggression, Green Day punk and Bush melody that dances the line between underground and commercial appeal” (March 16, 2000).
First radio track “Last Resort” was #2 most added at Active Rock its first week out and quickly became the #1 most-requested song at Live 105 in San Francisco; it’s reeled in Top 5 phones at WXTM (St. Louis), KUPD (Phoenix), KXTE (Las Vegas) and KRXQ (Sacramento).
Papa Roach recently took time off to make a video for “Last Resort,” with director Marcos Siega (Blink 182, Sevendust, P.O.D.). Sending a shout-out to their hometown supporters (P-Roach is from Vacaville, Calif.), the band asked Bay Area fans to submit a photo of themselves to the quintet’s website (www.paparoach.com); the first 500 to respond got to be in the video (which takes viewers inside several of these fans’ bedrooms).
Remarks lyricist Dick: “The song’s about contemplating suicide and feeling like you’re all alone in your situation. It’s written about a guy I lived with. He’s still alive, but he attempted suicide and through that, in a way, he killed the person inside him who was messed up. When we play this at shows, kids come up to me who connect really closely with it.” For this reason, Infest also confronts alcoholism (“Binge”), divorce (“Broken Home”) and back-stabbers (“Snakes”).
Papa Roach has been delivering their guitar-driven pyrotechnics since rising from the Northern California music scene in 1993. They’ve opened for Deftones, Limp Bizkit, Powerman 5000, Staind and Kid Rock and have released four CDs on their own Onion Hardcore Recordings. In a live review, Las Vegas City Life praised the band for its “surprising moments of vulnerability and sensitivity in its cathartic opera-core, [Dick] sounding almost pleading in the world-weary voice of youth betrayed” (May 20, 1999).
“I’m off the hook at shows,” confirms Dick. “I’ve done stupid things where our lawyer was going, ‘You can’t be doing that!’ but I’ve also hugged a million kids. How Nirvana was when they came out – that new edge of giving kids a release for their emotions – that’s how I hope people connect with Papa Roach’s music. I want to cause every emotion in people. I want them to fight, to fuck; I want to bring out their violence, their sadness, their happiness.”
Papa Roach will be walking it like they talk it this summer on the Vans Warped Tour. Those who can’t wait until then, however, should refer to the info below (more dates will be announced soon):
