ART GARFUNKEL
TO RECEIVE LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD AT 2003 GRAMMY
CEREMONIES IN THE MIDST OF WORLDWIDE TOUR
FOR HIS ACCLAIMED ‘EVERYTHING WAITS TO BE NOTICED’
ALBUM WITH MAIA SHARP AND BUDDY MONDLOCK
ON MANHATTAN RECORDS
ART GARFUNKEL has his plate full. He and trio-mates MAIA SHARP and BUDDY MONDLOCK recently completed a U.S. tour in support of their album EVERYTHING WAITS TO BE NOTICED–out now on Manhattan Records–and are packing their bags for a 17-date European tour. In between promo visits to Europe, ART will return to the United States to accept the 2003 Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award for his work in Simon and Garfunkel at a special February 22 ceremony in conjunction with the 45th Annual Grammy Awards. The album’s first single “Bounce” continues to impact the Adult Contemporary radio chart.
Of the Lifetime Achievement Award, Garth Fundis, Chairman of the Grammy Academy’s Board of Trustees, describes the recipients of this honor as “a diverse group of inspired creators who have contributed some of the most distinctive and seminal recordings of the past century…their outstanding achievements leave a timeless legacy that inspire generations of fans and artists alike.”
Former Simon and Garfunkel manager Mort Lewis commented that he is very pleased to have played a part in their international success and looked back fondly on his time spent with the duo by sharing a story of Art’s unique preferred mode of transportation: “After an extremely successful double-header concert at Carnegie Hall in 1969, I chartered a plane to fly us to and from Boston for a concert the next night. Artie decided he would pursue a favorite hobby and hitchhike to Boston instead of taking the plane. A young couple picked him up because he ‘looked like one of those two guys, Simon and Garfunkel.’ Even after producing his driver’s license, the couple refused to believe that the real Art Garfunkel would be hitchhiking! Artie arrived on time for the concert, but the kind couple never picked up the two complimentary tickets that were left at the box office for them…just as the hitchhiker had promised.”
Garfunkel continues to make friends out on the road, this time with critics who are praising the trio’s live show and album. Steve Morse from the Boston Globe said “…Garfunkel was reinvigorated. He has enjoyed an artistic renaissance because of new partners Maia Sharp and Buddy Mondlock. The three excelled on selections from Garfunkel’s new CD, Everything Waits to be Noticed. The whole night had a wonderful air of renewal.” Rolling Stone founder Jann Wenner praises the trio’s album in its liner notes saying, “Everything Waits To Be Noticed is a brisk, bopping pop-jazz set featuring the wonderful trio harmonies of Garfunkel, Buddy Mondlock and Maia Sharp. This album comes alive in a special and unique way.”
The European tour will be preceded by a few U.S. shows, with more dates being added. The complete tour schedule is below.
