RICH ROBINSON;
ARTIST WITH GUITARS AND PAINTBRUSHES
Having achieved global success with The Black Crowes and critical praise for his recently released solo debut PAPER, guitarist, vocalist and songwriter RICH ROBINSON is adding accomplished painter to his resume.
ROBINSON’s interest in creating art started 15 years ago when former Black Crowes bass player Johnny Colt gave him a set of painting supplies for Christmas. Since then, the musician has taken serious strides in honing his craft, which is featured on the cover of PAPER. “The album’s cover features an untitled oil on canvas painting by Robinson,” describes David Friedman of Connecticut’s News Times (10/17/04), who added that ROBINSON “also does gold leafing and etching, focusing on textures and layering.”
In his recent Cleveland Free Times feature (10/6/04), ROBINSON talked about his inspirations, saying: “I’m more into surrealism. I’m a huge fan of Dali, Picasso and Miro…I’m really into Giotto, a 14th-century iconic painter who used a lot of religious imagery with gold leafing behind it. Now I’ve been using a lot of gold leaf and a ton of paint to get a 3-D effect by etching into the paint.”
In addition to donating paintings to various charities (Birmingham Aids Outreach, Taste of Nations, The Genesis Shelter), ROBINSON has hosted successful gallery exhibitions and engaged in commission work.
