RICH ROBINSON’S NEW BAND
HOOKAH BROWN
TO DEBUT NEW MATERIAL IN THE NORTHEAST
RICH ROBINSON, co-founder and musical architect of The Black Crowes, is heading out on the road with his new band HOOKAH BROWN for a tour of Northeastern cities beginning January 21 in Baltimore. The as-yet-unsigned group will debut new material, including “Cut The World,” “Stand Up,” “Rude To Me” and “When You Will,” in addition to performing a few Black Crowes songs.
With a mix of bracing riffs, deep grooves, soulful vocals and swirling harmonies, HOOKAH BROWN’s songs combine American and British influences in equal measure, resulting in a sound that reflects their line-up of two Americans–ROBINSON, guitars/vocals, and BILL DOBROW, drums–and as many Brits: JOHN HOGG, lead vocals, and FIONN O’LOCHLAINN, bass.
When The Black Crowes parted ways in early 2002, ROBINSON continued to write songs and began to assemble HOOKAH BROWN by joining forces with vocalist/songwriter HOGG. The son of a Nigerian mother and Swedish father, HOGG was lead singer of the British rock group Moke, whom opened various shows for The Black Crowes. HOOKAH BROWN’s powerful rhythm section is manned by drummer DOBROW and bass player O’LOCHLAINN, two musicians who’ve toured and recorded extensively.
“One of my goals is to keep HOOKAH BROWN a four-piece,” says Robinson. “I don’t want to try and re-make The Black Crowes. I want to take what I learned from the band and try it in a different context. It’s all about leaving space in the music.”
