“RISING SON, THE LEGEND OF SKATEBOARDER CHRISTIAN HOSOI” chronicles the colorful life and career of CHRISTIAN HOSOI, one of skateboarding’s most talented and adored superstars, whose meteoric rise to superstardom was matched only by his spiraling descent into a federal prison sentence for drug trafficking. Produced by Jared Freedman and directed by renowned skate cult photographer Cesario ‘Block’ Montano, the story of the young renegade’s redemption will be released on DVD November 14 via QD3 Entertainment, the six-year-old multimedia production company founded by second-generation television and film producer Quincy (“QD3”) Jones III, in conjunction with Image Entertainment. That same day, Image will release the film’s soundtrack, which features music by System of a Down, Queens of the Stone Age, Gnarls Barkley and more, setting the high-energy tone of the film. The soundtrack will include many unreleased tracks, such as Dave Grohl’s “Vile” and Fishbone’s "Cheyenne.”
Narrated by Oscar-nominated actor Dennis Hopper, “RISING SON” includes never-before-seen home video footage of HOSOI as a child at the dawn of his prolific skating career, the ambush of fame and fortune that came faster than he could handle, and his life as a born again Christian pastor after his release from prison in 2004. The film features interviews with HOSOI as well as friends and family, including Tony Hawk, Tony Alva, Jay Adams, actor/skateboarder Jason Lee and others.
To launch the film, CHRISTIAN HOSOI will premiere “RISING SON” on a skating tour with Quiksilver–the world’s leading boardriding brand–along with the rest of its skate team. The eight-city tour will kick off August 17 at the Quiksilver headquarters in Huntington Beach, CA and travel through Chicago, Virginia Beach, West Chester, PA, New York City, Minneapolis, Denver and San Francisco. Each stop will feature either theatre or outdoor screenings of the film as well as demos and signings by HOSOI, Arto Saari, Omar Hassan, Stefan Janoski, Reese Forbes, Kyle Leeper, Dylan Reider, Eric Fletcher and others.
This is truly a Quiksilver happening marked by many firsts. The tour will be Hosoi’s first national tour since being released from prison in 2004. It will be the first time in over 10 years that fans will be able to see HOSOI back where he belongs: on a skateboard. And it will be the first time that Quiksilver’s entire skate team, including the hottest up-and-comers and the most established legends, will be skating for fans in demos and undercover at the nation’s most famous skate spots. Most importantly, this will be the first time fans will be able to view “RISING SON, THE LEGEND OF SKATEBOARDER CHRISTIAN HOSOI“ and experience this inside look into the rise, fall and rebirth of a true skateboarding pioneer and legend.

About CHRISTIAN HOSOI
At the age of 13, CHRISTIAN HOSOI emerged in the 80’s skateboarding scene as an awe-inspiring prodigy and quickly became one of the most popular and flamboyant skaters in the sport’s history. HOSOI originally developed as a skater in the famous “Dogtown” community of Venice Beach, rubbing elbows with established veterans such as Shogo Kubo, Tony Alva, Jay Adams and filmmaker Stacy Peralta, who later went on to direct the award-winning documentary Dogtown and Z-Boys. He eventually became one of the biggest “vert” superstars of all time and was famous for his aggressive and outlandish style and the unprecedented “air” he could generate on his stunts. He pioneered numerous signature moves (“Christ Air”), appeared in commercials, music videos, and movies and–between the contests, parties, and constant traveling–he managed to create and run multiple successful skateboard brands. Throughout his career, he defined the sport of skateboarding alongside friendly rival Tony Hawk and the competitions between HOSOI’s “showman” style and Hawk’s “technician” proficiency helped propel skateboarding into a legitimate and accessible sport.
In the late 1990’s, HOSOI’s rock star lifestyle, which included a proclivity for drugs and irresponsible behavior, began to destroy his skating, his businesses, and his life. In January of 2000, he was arrested at the Honolulu airport while attempting to transport crystal meth and was charged with trafficking with the intent to distribute, a federal crime and HOSOI’s third strike. He was sentenced to 10 years at the San Bernardino Detention Center. While in prison, HOSOI found a new outlook and purpose through Christianity. He began to minister to other inmates and, although still locked up, used his celebrity status to warn youth about the dangers of drugs. After receiving over 100 character statements on his behalf, including six letters from sheriff’s deputies, the Hawaii Federal District Court granted him an early release due to exemplary behavior.
HOSOI’s much anticipated return to professional skating has stirred up the community and excited virtually every skater, young and old, that has been privy to the legend or simply owned one of the legend’s signature board shapes. His addition to the Quiksilver skate team has reunited him with former rival Tony Hawk and paired him with other legends like Natas Kaupas and Omar Hassan as well as some of the new school greats like Arto Saari, Reese Forbes, and Stefan Janoski. HOSOI’s sponsorship by Quiksilver has also resulted in the production of the documentary “RISING SON, THE LEGEND OF SKATEBOARDER CHRISTIAN HOSOI.” Although professional skating has certainly evolved since the days when his portrait graced the pages of Rolling Stone, HOSOI is still skating with his trademark combination of strength and style and he plans to compete in major contests, relaunch Hosoi Skates, and perhaps author a book in the coming year.
