SHOWS AT LONG BEACH GRAND PRIX SET FOR THIS WEEKEND
On Saturday (4/17), RIVAL SONS will perform at “Arena Jamm” at the Long Beach Convention Center Arena, prior to Cheap Trick’s performance. On Sunday (4/18), they again perform at the “Arena Jamm” just before the Grand Prix race, billed as “America’s #1 Street Race”–which draws up to 200,000 car racing fans. The group’s song “Tell Me Something”—from their fiery debut album BEFORE THE FIRE–is also being used in Izod/Indy Car racing’s TV campaign.
Since forming in June 2008, the group–singer Jay Buchanan, guitarist Scott Holiday, bassist Robin Everhart and drummer Michael Miley has received acclaim for their blend of hard rock swagger with blistering musicianship. The website Pinpoint Music (www.pinpointmusic.com) picked BEFORE THIE FIRE as one of the Top 25 albums of the year, saying, "The Rival Sons are like rock and roll defibrillators–surging electric life back into the heart of what we thought was lost." Their song “Memphis Sun” was listed on Buzzbands.la official playlist for 2009 and the Huffington Post cited them as a “band to watch.”
Here’s what a few other critics had to say about RIVAL SONS:
“Check these guys out!! The music is amazing and their musicianship is killer!”
"Rival Sons echo the best of their '70s ancestors (the spark scattering pairings of Bowie/Ronson and Page/Plant come readily to mind, with interestingly a small sprinkling of The Monkees to boot) and do the tradition of thumping, hormonal rock 'n' roll proud by simply embracing its most appealing traits and presenting them with fresh enthusiasm."
"…unique style of blues-infused rock music. Backed by bassist Robin Everhart's groovy basslines, The Rival Sons opened with the invigorating rock anthem “Tell Me Something.” Sporting an ear-to-ear grin on his face, Holiday tore up and down the neck of his guitar, boasting gut-busting riffs that would turn the head of even the most die-hard Zeppelin fan. Singer Jay Buchanan threw back his long, curly hair and showed his vocal versatility with raw power in the up-tempo rock songs while smoothly serenading the crowd in such bluesy ballads as “On My Way” and “Memphis Sun…"
“…[they’ve] made one gnarly blues-rock album titled “Before the Fire.”
“If you'd walked in with your eyes closed and just heard the music coming off the stage, you still would have thought a member of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame was playing a rare club gig. Rival Sons, a rock and roll recipe of Led Zeppelin, Free, Bad Company, and The Who, topped off with a little Cream, boogied through a bounty of blues-based gems…Rival Sons has no contemporary rivals to speak of, but easily rivals some of its rock and roll forefathers with its power, passion and panache. I want more, indeed!”
