SHANA HALLIGAN
SET FOR SOLO PERFORMANCE TUESDAY, JUNE 21
AT LOS ANGELES’ BOOTLEG THEATER
BITTER:SWEET FRONTWOMAN
TO DEBUT NEW MATERIAL FROM HER UPCOMING ALBUM
‘RICHMOND PARADE’
Los Angeles’ SHANA HALLIGAN is an artist who’s constantly craving new experiences and ideas, and who has just passed through a creatively fertile period resulting in a renewed confidence and a whole new way to express herself through music. On Tuesday, June 21 she will perform material from her new album RICHMOND PARADE, as well as other songs from her past catalog, at a show at Los Angeles’ Bootleg Theater.
HALLIGAN crafted an entirely different album of music for RICHMOND PARADE with Bristol, UK producer Alex Cowan, better known as TM Juke. She’s enthusiastic to describe the music, which she terms, “…a really fun, soulful, upbeat club album.” The album is scheduled to be released later this year (label TBA) and two of its tracks— “Listen” and “It’s On”—can be heard via her website at http://SHANAHALLIGAN.com/richmond-parade.
More than anything, she’s ready to reconnect with old fans while introducing herself to a new world of music listeners as SHANA HALLIGAN, solo artist. After nearly seven exceedingly successful years as the singer/songwriter and front woman of sophisticated pop band Bitter:Sweet (who’s songs were featured in such major motion pictures as The Devil Wears Prada, Sex And The City, Duplicity and Shoot Em Up, hit TV shows like “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Lipstick Jungle” and “Smallville,” and commercials for Victoria’s Secret and Korbel Champagne), HALLIGAN found herself all alone in Europe in search of her next sound.
The songstress spent the last two years overseas stretching her musical muscles through a series of inspired collaborations. She indulged her house/dance music side with”Until You Find Another,” a track on house producer Carmen Rizzo’s latest full-length Looking Through Leaves. She also recorded the blissful electronic dance track “Sleepwalk” with stalwart San Francisco DJ/producer Charles Webster exclusively for designer eyewear brand Oliver Peoples’ most recent CD compilation, simply titled Seven. A far more unexpected collaboration found HALLIGAN writing and recording with friend Serj Tankian, best known as the lead singer of progressive metal heroes System of a Down, two songs that appear on his September 2010 solo album, Imperfect Harmonies. HALLAGAN in addition appeared on Thievery Corporation’s Culture of Fear as a vocalist on “Is It Over?”
HALLIGAN also crafted an entire album with Marc Collin of French musical collective Nouvelle Vague which will be released after RICHMOND PARADE. Recorded in Collin’s studio in Paris, the resulting music is what HALLIGAN describes as “dark, moody, very heavy synthesizers—I call it Sebastian Tellier meets Donna Summer meets Peggy Lee.” It was a collaboration that found HALLIGAN swept up into the Nouvelle Vague universe, recording and performing as part of the band throughout Europe including a sold out show at London’s Royal Albert Hall this past November. She is also featured on Collin’s Girls of Nouvelle Vague album.
The daughter of founding Blood Sweat and Tears band member/composer/arranger Dick Halligan, SHANA learned from an early age that there are no limits as far as where you can go in music. “The music is still very playful and sexy, but it also has more depth, soul and heavier beats,” she says. “But it’s still very much me. I’ve just really pushed myself in different directions. It’s a rounder sound—the music goes into a few more places.”
SHANA HALLIGAN will perform on Tuesday, June 21 at the
Bootleg Theater, 2220 Beverly Blvd., Los Angeles, CA. www.bootlegtheater.org
with KCRW’s Jason Eldredge and afterparty with DJ Mr.numberonederful.
Show starts at 8 pm sharp. Tickets $8 in advance, $10 day of show.
