Hailed by the BBC for his “eye-watering brilliance,” Los Angeles-based, Manchester-born multi-instrumentalist and singer/songwriter LEO JAMES CONROY has released his first taste of new music following his debut 2018 EP Plastic Chairs & Cigarette Fumes (Alternative Fidelity Records) with the new track “Chalk” last Friday, August 30.
With CONROY on lead vocals, whistles and piano, along with producer/keyboardist Lyell Evans Roeder and Ankit Suri (additional percussion, additional production), the evocative single with a funky undertow features a mixture of remarkable guest musicians including backing vocalist Sharlotte Gibson (Eric Clapton, Whitney Houston, Stevie Wonder), drummer Aaron ‘Heavy Drums’ Mathews (Bones), guitarist Carmen Vandenberg (Jeff Beck, Bones), bassist/ additional producer Ryan Guajardo, trumpeter Joe Epstein, violist Troy Everett and saxophonist Aamir Javaid. The renowned Barry Grint (The Rolling Stones, David Bowie, The Beatles, Oasis, Radiohead) served as mastering engineer.
“One of the beautiful things about this recording was that it presented an opportunity to bring together a lot our musical family,” shares Roeder.
CONROY adds, “It’s a song for everyone from my past who might not recognize me now, telling them that although I’ve changed a lot over the years, my love has not and never will.”
CONROY will make his way to the East Coast tonight to join forces with global sensation TASH SULTANA who handpicked him to open on select dates of the upcoming North American tour after connecting on social media. CONROY will appear from September 3-8 including a performance at the Central Park Summerstage in New York City on Wednesday, September 4.
“I was introduced to Tash via Instagram in 2015,” explains CONROY. “A fan of mine who had been following her since her busking days tagged me in one of her videos saying that we would make a dream collaboration and I totally felt it. So, I sent her a message, she liked what I do, and we’ve been following each other ever since. Earlier this year we got an email out of the blue offering the tour slot and I could not be happier to finally meet and play together!”
