LOS ANGELES RAPPER
SOZAY
TO JOIN HOUSE OF PAIN
FOR 24-DATE “HE WHO BREAKS THE LAW” TOUR
GRAMMY® WEEK SHOWCASE TONIGHT
THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 10
AT PLAYHOUSE IN HOLLYWOOD
Rising Los Angeles rapper SOZAY will mark his invasion of the local scene with a Grammy® week showcase tonight, Thursday, February 10, at Los Angeles’ premiere hip-hop venue Playhouse (6506 Hollywood Blvd. LA, CA 90028). SOZAY will perform a handful of songs off his debut EP titled Who Is Sozay? released in late 2010 as a teaser to his forthcoming debut LP BLACK SEPTEMBER due out September 2011.
With his seamless combination of jaw-dropping rhymes, infectious hooks and head-nodding beats, SOZAY who has shared the stage with Digital Underground, Yelawolf, Guerilla Black, Sly Boogy, Tha Alkaholiks, Slick Rick, DJ Green Lantern and Black Sheep will join hip-hop veterans House of Pain on their “He Who Breaks The Law” tour this spring. Big B and Slaine will open for the nationwide trek which begins March 15 in San Francisco and hits Los Angeles, Dallas, Houston, Washington, DC, New York City, Boston, Chicago, Minneapolis and many more cities nationwide (see full itinerary below).
Born and raised in Los Angeles, SOZAY had a remarkable upbringing. White with a Spanish last name he attended a magnet school whose population was 90% black and 10% white. The product of a broken home whose father was noticeably absent, SOZAY was raised by his single mother. Although his friends called such rugged locales as Inglewood, Watts and South Central home, his cousin from Fresno, CA sparked SOZAY’s initial interest in rap. Armed with a tape of Metallica’s Ride The Lightning on one side and NWA’s Boyz-N-The-Hood on the other, although impressed with Metallica’s rapid-fire metal, he was hooked on the violent Los Angeles lifestyle and ethos Eazy-E portrayed. “It was like a cowboy movie on wax,” SOZAY recalls.
After succumbing to drug use, incarceration in local and federal institutions and half-heartedly pursuing music, SOZAY’s life changed when he decided to fully dedicate himself to being a hip-hop artist. SOZAY’s grassroots approach and unrelenting work ethic have made him an intense up and comer in the underground hip-hop scene. U.S. crowds will finally get a taste of what’s to come on his debut LP including the funky, anthemic Los Angeles love poem “So L.A.,” the clever wordplay and the lyrical gymnastics of “One” and “L.A. Kings.” SOZAY shifts gears on the club-ready “Last Call” and the sensual “Miss Ready Go.” He turns philosophical on the piano-accented “High Hopes,” which documents his struggles with family, drugs, law enforcement and himself.
