GETTIN' "FURTHUR" AND TALLER: THE BLACK CROWES are sprinkling their "Furthur Festival" sets this summer with new songs intended for their next album: "If It Ever Stops Raining," "Paint An Eight," "My Heart's Killing Me" and "Only A Fool." And keeping true to the communal spirit of the tour, the band–CHRIS ROBINSON, vocals; RICH ROBINSON, vocals, guitars; JOHNNY COLT, bass; MARC FORD, guitars; STEVE GORMAN, drums; EDDIE HARSCH, keyboards–have been inviting their "Furthur" comrades onstage for cover songs: Bruce Hornsby has joined for Gram Parsons' "She" and the traditional "Boomer's Story," while Bob Weir (Ratdog, Grateful Dead) jammed on "Hard To Handle" and Jorma Kaukonen (Jefferson Airplane, Hot Tuna) for Willie Dixon's "Mellow Down Easy." Writing about the band's improvisational jams, Jon Pareles noted in a recent New York Times review: "As the Dead knew, there's no substitute for years on the road, and THE BLACK CROWES–particularly in a majestic jam that ended with 'Hard To Handle'–made every detour sound like a scenic route." Following THE BLACK CROWES' set, an electric jam happens every night, with various band members jamming with other "Furthur" participants. "Furthur" jams have included workouts on such classics as Little Feat's "Willin'," the Rolling Stones' "Jumpin' Jack Flash" and "Dead Flowers," Traffic's "Dear Mr. Fantasy" and "The Low Spark of High Heel Boys" and the Byrds' "You Ain't Going Nowhere." All of this news is being documented every night on THE BLACK CROWES' website at http://www.tallest.com. The "Furthur Festival" concludes August 3 at Irvine Meadows Amphitheatre in Irvine, CA.
