In tandem with his continuing role in Fleetwood Mac, MICK FLEETWOOD has formed THE MICK FLEETWOOD BAND featuring the co-founder and drummer of one of the most successful bands of all time. They’ll release their debut album SOMETHING BIG September 28 on FLEETWOOD’s TallMan Records in conjunction with Sanctuary Records. The album is a collaborative effort with singer/songwriter/guitarist TODD SMALLWOOD and vocalist LAUREN EVANS, and also includes special guests Jackson Browne, Lee Sklar and John McVie, with whom MICK founded FLEETWOOD MAC in 1967. Additionally on SOMETHING BIG, Fleetwood reunites with one-time Fleetwood Mac guitarist/singer Jeremy Spencer for the first time in more than three decades.
September also brings the Sanctuary release of DESTINY RULES, a behind-the-scenes DVD (in stores 9/14) of the making of FLEETWOOD MAC’s 2003 album SAY YOU WILL. Originally aired as a VH1 special, Destiny Rules was acclaimed for the candid, fly-on-the-wall footage that captured the often dramatic recording of the group’s latest studio album. Starring MICK FLEETWOOD, JOHN McVIE, LINDSEY BUCKINGHAM and STEVIE NICKS, the DVD was described by Entertainment Weekly as “…a remarkable special…the clash and synthesis between commercial and artistic impulses…a squirmingly raw look at the inner life of a rock group.”
By starting THE MICK FLEETWOOD BAND, MICK says, “It’s basically what I’ve been doing with Fleetwood Mac for 35 years–discovering artists that I enjoy playing with. I’m hoping it will be a morphing, creative entity, with the key elements being myself and Todd.” The album and the first single “Something Big”–set to hit AAA radio 9/13–encompass myriad musical textures, all brought together by musicians who are considered the best, along with 21-year-old newcomer LAUREN EVANS. “She’s the first example of the sort of elements that we can bring into the band; she’s unknown but really talented.” FLEETWOOD says the album (his third solo project) “feels like an old friend,” with its laid-back grooves and down-to-earth songs penned by SMALLWOOD like “Where The Wind Blows,” “Walking With The Angels” and “No Borders.” FLEETWOOD and SMALLWOOD co-wrote one song, “Passion.”
SOMETHING BIG morphed out of a chance introduction of FLEETWOOD and SMALLWOOD, who has worked with the likes of Jackson Browne, Gregg Allman, Gladys Knight and Chaka Khan. “We met through sound engineer Dennis Mays, and we started hanging out at his studio, listening to his songs. So it grew out of having fun, and Todd has so many great songs that I was becoming very familiar with. He gave up performance some years ago, but the volcano of who he really is was still active. And I saw that—that he should be singing these songs that we could really build around.”
