THE RANDIES:
DEBUT ALBUM ‘AT THE FRIENDSHIP MOTOR INN’
SET FOR WIDE-RELEASE IN MARCH
THE RANDIES’ debut album AT THE FRIENDSHIP MOTOR INN–a mix of straight-ahead rock, ultra-sweet harmonies and grrrl punk bravado–is set for wide release in March from indie Elicit Records/MRI via Navarre distribution. Recently, the Los Angeles Times’ Kevin Bronson hailed: “The L.A. quartet delivers its pop punk with a wink and a shredded guitar riff. On their debut At The Friendship Motor Inn, The Randies channel a few decades of punky female-fronted bands, from the Runaways to The Muffs. There are songs about boys, relationships and more boys. And a paean to Kevin Bacon. They pull it off with flair” (11/14/04).
The Los Angeles based group–SIENNA DEGOVIA (lead vocals, bass), LAURA CATALDO (guitars, backing vocals), MEGAN McCARTER (guitars, backing vocals) and KELLY CAIRNS (drums)–will perform songs from their debut on a headlining Southern California tour beginning February 8 in their hometown. The group will also perform alongside Me First & The Gimme Gimme’s featuring Fat Mike of NOFX on Saturday, March 12 at the Troubadour in West Hollywood.
In his LA WEEKLY live review, Paul Rogers raved:
“It’s jarring to stumble across a band as gifted, sculpted and hard to ignore as The Randies…Most arresting is the vocal interplay between bassist Sienna DeGovia and guitarists Laura Cataldo and Megan McCarter: Beach Boys-and GoGo’s-influenced strands of melody conversing, meshing and overlapping like trains of thought. Aside from their vocal prowess, what saves The Randies from just being another cutesy retro-pop affair is a backbone of punkish Blondie/Runaways panache and a knowing self-confidence in delivery. The guitars are sufficiently strapping, and Kelly Cairns’ unpretentiously appropriate beats land with enough velocity to confirm that, regardless of stylistic nuances, this is a rock band” (11/5/04).
With songwriting subjects covering relationships, dessert and sex, in no particular order, standout tracks include the explosive album opener “Boys In Stereo”; the mid-tempo ode to pink frosting, rainbow sprinkles and seduction “Cookie; and “Good For You,” which rails against the double standard of male/female infidelity.
The almost all-girl group formed two years ago at L.A.’s famed independent rock joint Mr. T’s Bowl. After SIENNA, LAURA and MEGAN hooked up with KELLY on drums, the group hit their stride and now boast a strong fanbase on the West Coast. Live, the band’s toe-tapping refrains and bratty vocals deliver.
