VH1 ROCK HONORS AWARD FOR
“GREATEST ROCK VENUE WEBSITE”
LEGENDARY SHOWROOM ALSO GARNERS “BEST OF CITYSEARCH” ACCOLADE
AND WILL CELEBRATE IT’S 35th ANNIVERSARY THIS FALL
VH1 has revealed the winners of their 2008 Rock Honors Awards with Los Angeles’ THE ROXY THEATRE receiving the nod for “Greatest Rock Venue Website” for www.theroxyonsunset.com, the official website for THE ROXY THEATRE and its sister bar On The Rox. In the spirit of the show, VH1 called upon rock fans to determine the best venue websites, which also included nominees The Bowery Ballroom in NYC, El Corazon in Seattle and Red Rocks in Denver.
In other news, THE ROXY THEATRE also garnered a “Best of Citysearch 2008” accolade, with the prominent entertainment site’s Matt MacDonald stating about the venue: “The club itself has the potential to be intimate, but the acts that play this legendary spot in Hollywood are far too colorful to keep things quiet–especially not with one of the best sound systems on the Sunset Strip. Floor-level and raised standing area (with some occasional seats), a spacious dance floor/mosh pit and a bar loaded for beer all add up to an authentic Hollywood experience. Eclectic to the max.” Check out more at: http://losangeles.citysearch.com/profile/101423/west_hollywood_ca/the_roxy_theatre.html.
Today the venue is helmed by Nic Adler, son of legendary producer Lou Adler (Monterey International Pop Festival, The Rocky Horror Show, Jan and Dean, Johnny Rivers, The Mamas and The Papas, Spirit, Carole King, Cheech and Chong), who along with Elmer Valentine launched THE ROXY onto the forefront of the American musical landscape. It remains one of the most prominent independently owned venues in Los Angeles. Look for information to follow soon regarding THE ROXY’s plans for their upcoming 35th anniversary celebration in October.
Since opening in the fall of 1973 with legendary performances from the likes of Neil Young, Cheech & Chong and Frank Zappa, THE ROXY THEATRE has become one of the country’s most legendary and influential music venues. The history of THE ROXY is paved with icons, whether it was pre-stardom shows from yet to be famous acts like David Bowie, Bruce Springsteen, Sex Pistols, Guns N’ Roses, Foo Fighters, Gnarls Barkley, Amy Winehouse and the Pussycat Dolls, the setting for landmark “Live At The Roxy” recordings by Bob Marley & The Wailers, Brian Wilson and Social Distortion, or the designated party destination for John Lennon, John Belushi and any music-savvy celebrity today. Even up to now, with tonight’s Myspace secret show with Nas along with a performance from teen sensation Demi Lovato, THE ROXY’s patrons are always privy to the best in what is the best in music today.
Three decades on, the club has also been a popular performance mecca for other entertainment including stage productions, comedy shows and performance art. Among the club’s unique features are comfortable booth seating, full-service bar and a menu that features a modest array of dishes to keep appetites satisfied. THE ROXY’s 500-person capacity open dance floor and superb sound facilities offer fans one of the most intimate entertainment experiences around. THE ROXY’s sister venue On The Rox has its own share of entertainment whether world-class DJ’s or live music with shows by Justice, Chromeo or the Ting Tings to name a few. Located above THE ROXY and overlooking Sunset Blvd., this intimate space features its own full-service bar and DJ booth with proprietary sound system.
