THE SMASHING PUMPKINS
RELEASE “THAT’S THE WAY (MY LOVE IS),”
THE SECOND SINGLE FROM ‘ZEITGEIST’
BAND TO HEADLINE KROQ’S “L.A. INVASION” SHOW AS PART OF THEIR FALL TOUR
HEADLINING FESTIVAL APPEARANCES IN NORTH AMERICA
INCLUDE THE VIRGIN FESTIVAL IN TORONTO AND THE VOODOO MUSIC EXPERIENCE IN NEW ORLEANS
THE SMASHING PUMPKINS—currently headlining festivals and their own shows in Europe for the second time this year—have just released “That’s The Way (My Love Is),” the second single from ZEITGEIST (Martha’s Music/Reprise), their critically acclaimed and worldwide chart-topping album. “That’s The Way (My Love Is)” follows the success of “Tarantula,” which peaked at #2 on Billboard’s “Modern Rock Tracks” chart.
The Pumpkins debuted “That’s The Way (My Love Is)” Friday, July 13 on The Late Show with David Letterman after having opened the week by performing “Tarantula” July 9 on the show. Meanwhile, look for the Paul Brown-directed video of “That’s The Way (My Love Is),” recently shot in Los Angeles, to emerge in the coming weeks.
After the Pumpkins’ overseas dates conclude August 29 in Athens, Greece, they return to North America for a busy fall. The band will headline their own shows and top the bill at the massive KROQ “L.A. Invasion” show 9/15 at the Home Depot Center in Los Angeles which also features Velvet Revolver and Foo Fighters. Other high profile appearances include headlining the Virgin Festival in Toronto (9/9) and the Voodoo Music Experience at New Orleans’ City Park during Halloween weekend (10/27).
The Pumpkins’ fall tour—their first full-scale North American tour since 2000–will take the band to theatres and amphitheatres including Red Rocks in Denver and is highlighted by multiple night engagements in Vancouver, Boston, Philadelphia and Atlanta. Joining the Pumpkins on tour are The Bravery (9/24-10/9) and then Explosions in the Sky (10/11 to mid-November, except in Dallas).
The return of THE SMASHING PUMPKINS has been highlighted by a true sense of renewal and artistic vitality, as particularly evidenced by their sold-out residencies at the Orange Peel in Asheville, NC (nine shows between 6/23-7/5) and the historic Fillmore (11 shows between 7/15-8/1) in San Francisco, CA. Writing about opening night at The Fillmore in the Los Angeles Times, Richard Cromelin observed: "…the musicians played everything with an enveloping, epic force that demanded full and immediate attention” (7/17/07). On the road, main singer-songwriter and guitarist Billy Corgan and drummer Jimmy Chamberlin have welcomed Jeff Schroeder (guitar) and Ginger Reyes (bass) to the line-up, which is supported by keyboardist Lisa Harriton.
Throughout their residencies, the Pumpkins rotated over 70 songs, digging deep into its catalog of hits, album cuts and B-sides. With all shows spanning an impressive three hours, the intimate gigs encompassed rarities and fan favorites (“Day Dream,” Drown,” “Aeroplane Flies High”) as well as classic Pumpkins tunes and the potent material from their sixth album ZEITGEIST. The band even played 13 brand new, unrecorded songs, many of which were written and debuted the same day: “Peace + Love,” “Psalm 131,” “99 Floors,” “Question Mark,” “!,” “Mama,” “If All Goes Wrong,” “Promise Me,” “The Leaving Lament,” “No Surrender,” “The Rose March,” “I’m Doing The Best I Can” and “Superchrist.”
These shows were marked by acoustic versions of Pumpkins material that gave the songs different dimensions as well as sprawling electric improvisatory flights that took the band—and the audience—in exciting new directions.
As Corgan explained to fans on the band’s website:
“…our stated hope for playing so many shows in a fixed locale is to foster an environment of creativity, risk taking, and mutual community…to attempt to find some new forms (musically and aesthetically) that will point us future forward…this means playing songs not yet written, digging thru some forgotten ones, and a whole lot of rehearsing during the days ahead so the nights will be filled with chance…we hope that each of these performances can be a great adventure, and look fully to capture the spirit of the moment, wherever we all may be… “
For all residency shows, fans were invited to bring cameras and recording equipment, and clips can be seen all over the internet as well as behind-the-scenes footage shot by the band on www.smashingpumpkins.com
