TO LAUNCH WORLD TOUR MARCH 23
HEADLINING SHOWS AND FESTIVALS SET THROUGH AUGUST 11
THE SMASHING PUMPKINS will launch a world tour March 23 through August 11 with concerts in the U.S., Europe, U.K., Japan and Mexico. The band–singer/guitarist BILLY CORGAN, guitarist JEFF SCHROEDER, drummer MIKE BYRNE and bassist NICOLE FIORENTINO–will perform songs encompassing their iconic body of work including songs from their acclaimed 2012 album OCEANIA, which entered the Billboard Top 200 Albums Chart at #4 and earned the#1 spot on the Independent Albums Chart. As they were on the 2012 tour, the PUMPKINS will be backed by visuals prepared by Sean Evans, whose most recent project was assisting Roger Waters on the newest staging of “The Wall.” The band is using new technology in video-mapping to create something new and previously unseen.
Here’s praise for the PUMPKINS’ 2012 tour:
“Oceania‘s title song was characteristically spacious, defiant, uplifting, noisy and melodic, with whispers and screams and echoing guitar lines. It was a Corgan translation of Pink Floyd. And ‘Violet Rays’ emerged from layers of Floydian keyboard swells before shifting into some jagged outlaw guitar…The second part of the show wasn’t simply a predictable set of hits, but something more interesting, beginning with a searing take on David Bowie’s ‘Space Oddity.’ The song was ideally suited to Corgan’s high-tension voice (12/15/12).”
–Steve Appleford, ROLLINGSTONE.COM, 12/15/12
“…this latest incarnation of the Pumpkins is the strongest in years.”
— Candace Horgan, DENVER POST, 10/17/12
“Three songs into the 2 1/2-hour set, Corgan showed he’s every bit the balladeer he was in the ’90s, nasally crooning ‘The Celestials,’ the lead single off ‘Oceania,’ with T-shirt sensitivity. Meanwhile, somber standouts such as ‘Violet Rays’ and ‘Wildflower’ slide seamlessly into the Pumpkins’ catalog, harkening back to epics of old without feeling like retreads.”
— Michael Rietmulder, STAR TRIBUNE (Minneapolis, MN), 10/21/12
“…you can’t help but admire Mr. Corgan for pushing things forward and making a case for Smashing Pumpkins as a band that it still matters.”
–Scott Mervis, PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE, 12/7/12
“Collectively, the tracks effectively evoke the angst and wonder so pointedly conveyed during the band’s ’90s heyday, and find a good balance between adventure-seekers (the nine-minute, mood-and-sonic-spanning title track) and concise, catchy rockers (twinkling, wide range ‘Pale Horse;’ the pulsating ‘Panopticon’)…And they translated well live. Corgan fittingly spit on stage during the no-holds-barred-shredding during set-opener ‘Quasar,’ and during ‘One Diamond, One Heart,’ his guitar cut through the dreamy synth loops like the slice of a sharp blade.”
–Piet Levy, MILWAUKEE JOURNAL SENTINEL, 10/1/12

About THE SMASHING PUMPKINS:
THE SMASHING PUMPKINS have created one of the most acclaimed bodies of work in musical history having sold more than 30 million albums, and won multiple Grammy Awards in the process. Formed in Chicago in 1988, they released Gish, their influential and platinum debut in 1991, which was followed by albums including the nine-time platinum Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness and the four-time platinum Siamese Dream, as well as the platinum certified 1998 album Adore. The pivotal group’s many hits defined the alternative music era and continue to resonate on modern rock radio, influencing a whole new generation. The PUMPKINS returned in 2007 with their acclaimed sixth album Zeitgeist. They have since remained on the cutting edge of music and technology with various online releases. In June 2012, the band released the album Oceania, via Martha’s Music/EMI Label Services/Caroline Distribution. Marking THE SMASHING PUMPKINS’ 7th studio record, it is “an album within an album,” part of their 44-song work-in-progress Teargarden By Kaleidyscope.
