BAND IN THE MIDST OF HEADLINING U.S. TOUR AND WILL JOIN VANS WARPED TOUR FROM JULY 20-AUGUST 19
TIGER ARMY will unveil their new album III: GHOST TIGERS RISE June 29 on Hellcat/Epitaph, and the band will celebrate the CD release with two headlining gigs at the House Of Blues Sunset Strip on July 10 and 11. Leaders of the burgeoning psychobilly movement in the U.S., TIGER ARMY brings increased attention to the genre–a musical mélange of punk and fifties rockabilly twang complete with stand-up bass and an infusion of the macabre.
Self-produced by frontman NICK 13, III: GHOST TIGERS RISE elevates the band to a new level by creating their own distinct sonic mix, where meticulously crafted vintage tones meet modernity. Standout tracks include: “Wander Alone,” a spirited rocker with a muscular mid-tempo; the stunning “Ghostfire” which reveals a chilling melody and a gothic country flavor alternating with punk intensity; and “Rose in the Devil’s Garden,” which hints at the influence of 1980s darkpop à la the Smiths, the Cure and Depeche Mode. The CD is already receiving early critical praise. In the June issue of Alternative Press, writer Ryan Downey praised: “…poised to be the next great punk band…[they] made two incredible albums for Hellcat Records, both of which lent credibility to the phrase ‘American Psychobilly’…songs like the near-ballad ‘Rose Of The Devil’s Garden’ and even the upbeat stomper ‘Atomic’ seem destined to be classics…When you dig beneath the skillfully slapping bass and ‘50s guitar twang, the new disc even boasts a bit of ‘80s new wave that’s reminiscent of the Smiths or the Cure.”
While the band’s history has often centered around overcoming adversity and succeeding despite the odds, the darkly emotive songs on III: GHOST TIGERS RISE were created after the group overcame an obstacle that almost killed one of its members when drummer Fred Hell was shot four times in March 2003 in a brutal home invasion robbery. NICK 13 explains: “When we were in the middle of working on the new songs, Fred was shot and everything came to a halt. Somehow, miraculously, his life did not. To this day he literally has a bullet in his brain, which the surgeons informed us posed less of a danger than would an attempt to remove it.”
TIGER ARMY–NICK 13 (vocals, guitar) GEOFF KRESGE (stand-up bass, vocals) FRED HELL (Drums)–are in the midst of a headlining U.S. tour which includes the aforementioned headlining gigs at the House Of Blues West Hollywood July 10 and 11. They’ll then join the main stage of the Vans Warped Tour this summer from July 20-August 19.
