TOM PETTY AND THE HEARTBREAKERS
WILL BE JOINED BY JACKSON BROWNE
ON THEIR AMERICAN SUMMER TOUR;
PETTY AND COMPANY KEEP IT FRESH WITH ALTERNATING SET LISTS AS THEY ANNOUNCE
ADDITIONAL DATES
As they criss-cross America on their 31-date summer tour, TOM PETTY and THE HEARTBREAKERS are delivering powerful live shows encompassing their classics, rare live favorites and cover songs that illuminate their musical heritage. In exciting news, very special guest Jackson Browne will join the second leg of the trek–June 27 in Scranton, Pennsylvania through July 21 in Indianapolis, Indiana–performing a full set with his band before PETTY and THE HEARTBREAKERS take the stage.
Alongside “Free Fallin’,” “American Girl,” “I Won’t Back Down,” “Mary Jane’s Last Dance” and “You Don’t Know How It Feels,” there are songs in the set list making their first live appearance in years: “Here Comes My Girl,” “Straight Into Darkness,” “Even The Losers” and “Too Much Ain’t Enough,” the latter of which is a nugget from their second album. Fans have also been treated to interpretations of Merle Haggard’s “Closin’ Time,” Howlin’ Wolf’s blues classic “Little Red Rooster” and the rockabilly song “Guitar Boogie Shuffle.” PETTY is alternating his set list nightly and posting them on his official website: tompetty.com.
At the tour’s opening night at the Gill Coliseum in Corvallis, Oregon, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer’s Gene Stout noted: “A capacity crowd of more than 18,000 arrived early to enjoy the season’s first big outdoor concert…The crowd sang and clapped along, caught up in the euphoria of Petty’s rock anthems…Tom jokingly introduced himself as ‘so young and so tanned’…his rapport with fans couldn’t have been better.” Stout added: “(Tom) and the band performed old songs as if they were new, adding texture and nuance to longtime favorites…Like Bob Dylan and Neil Young, the nasal-voiced singer-guitarist commands respect with his simple, direct, roots-conscious music. His unwavering, Byrds-influenced folk rock has survived many trends, from punk to heavy metal to rap.”
In his review of the first of two sold-out shows at Denver’s Red Rocks, G. Brown of the Denver Post stated: “The fact is, the music Petty has been creating with the Heartbreakers for close to three decades is never out of vogue. And with the veteran rockers’ trademark power chords and wry story-songs blaring through the summer night air, fans got their money’s worth.”
In Seattle, PETTY introduced THE HEARTBREAKERS–MIKE CAMPBELL (guitars), HOWIE EPSTEIN (bass, vocals) and BENMONT TENCH (keyboards) with longtime associates SCOTT THURSTON (guitars, harmonica) and drummer STEVE FERRONE–by saying: “I really feel like I play in the best rock ‘n’ roll band in the world.” In Denver, he added: “From my heart, I am still so happy to be in this band…We’re coming up on our 25th year.”
The trek is divided into two legs, with the first running through June 2 in the Western United States, Southwest and the Pacific Coast. The second leg will begin June 27 in Scranton, Pennsylvania and continues through July 21 in the East and Midwest with newly added dates in Atlanta and Nashville.
The Wallflowers opened the first run of dates through May 21 in Dallas, with Steve Earle and The Dukes opening the remainder of the first leg, ending June 2 in Las Vegas.
